Bowhunters Raise $25,000 for Cancer Research To Shave Marion "M.R." James
The Arnold S. Leonard Cancer Research Fund was the beneficiary of a terrific pile of hair shaved from the head of Bowhunter Magazine founder and pro-hunting spokesman Marion "M.R." James and of $25,000 that bowhunters attending the 2002 AMO Archery Trade Show contributed to watch as the shearing took place.
Bowhunters at the AMO Archery Trade Show in Nashville in January raised $25,000 to watch as Patty Brady of Archery Business Magazine shaved the head of Bowhunter Magazine founder and pro-hunting spokesman Marion "M.R." James - bald. "Fine," M.R. laughed, "with this kind of money going to cancer research, it's worth it!"
"M.R. was the perfect person to allow his head to be shaved to raise money for cancer research," says Michele Musacchia Crummer of Muzzy Products. Michele, who is co-chair of the Research Fund, worked with Fund Chairman Rob Evans to entice the affable and hairy bowhunter into the shearing lounge. "He was a great sport and I would like to thank him and recognize the pledges from significant contributors:

$  5,000     Ted Nugent
$  5,000     Sims Vibration Labs
$  5,000     Muzzy Products
$  3,500     Mathews Archery
$  6,500     Cash and pledges collected at the AMO Banquet.

M.R. James, the founder of Bowhunter Magazine

"The Arnold S. Leonard Cancer Research Fund was begun by bowhunter and researcher Arnold Leonard to study the ability of genetic engineering to bolster a person's immune system," says Rob Evans, the internationally recognized bowhunter who brought the fund's needs to the attention of archers. "We as hunters have an opportunity to make a difference. With the funds generated by M.R.'s generous donation of curly locks and funding raised by our annual Driven Pheasant Shoot, we estimate that hunters, mostly bowhunters, have raised nearly $3 million for cancer research."
