Cartersville, GA -- Marty McClellen of Wills Point, Texas,
has been hunting fish with a bow and arrow for more than 16 years, but
the alligator gar he pulled out of the Trinity River on July 8, 2001 was
by far the largest fish he has ever taken. "I shot it at two o'clock in
the afternoon. It pulled us around the river for two and a half hours before
we could wrestle it into the boat," the proud bowfisherman says.
Marty McClellen used a
Muzzy Quick Release Gar Point (#1010) to take the newTexas State Record
for Alligator Gar. "With a Muzzy," Marty says, "even if he's six feet underwater,
I can stick a gar and hold it. They're terrific fish points."
When
the weight of the alligator gar (atractesteus spatula) was verified by
Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Steve Stapleton on Monday July 9th,
the huge fish scored a remarkable 290 pounds. "And it had been out of the
water - hanging from a tree in my yard for much of that time - for nearly
18 hours before we got it officially scored," Marty McClellan says. "There's
no telling how much weight it lost all that time."
Marty took the record gar with an 80-pound bow and a Muzzy Quick Release
Gar Point (#1010). "With a Muzzy head," Marty says, "even if a fish is
six feet underwater, I can still stick it and hold it. Muzzys are terrific
fish points, 'cause these big gar have tough, thick scales. Like armor."
"At Muzzy, it gives us a lot of pride to have people like Marty McClellen
use our gear to have fun and enjoy the outdoors," says Muzzy Bowfishing
Director Mark Land. "And if they should happen to take a trophy, that's
icing on the cake. Marty used our Quick Release Gar Point with a Trocar
Tip and unique push/turn/pull quick-release mechanism. Our Gar Point holds
solid until you want to release it. It's perfect for minnows or for big,
tough fish."
