NWTF works to improve Michigan Wild Turkey habitatEdgefield, S.C. - The National Wild Turkey Federation, in conjunction with its Michigan state and local chapters, has partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to improve winter habitat for wild turkeys and other wildlife in northern Michigan. The organizations will work together to plant 200 acres of corn in strategic locations and several thousand fruit producing trees during the spring of 2000. These food sources will help provide much needed nourishment for wild turkeys and other wildlife during harsh Michigan winters. Northern Michigan NWTF chapters have been planting corn for several years to enhance the winter survival of wild turkeys. This new project will be concentrated in Alcona, Montmorency, Oscoda, Presque Isle and Alpena counties, where Michigan DNR wildlife feeding practices have been curtailed due to an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis. The project will eventually be expanded to surrounding counties. "This is a great opportunity to provide winter habitat for all types of wildlife not just turkeys. Many of these plantings will continue to produce for several years, providing wildlife with a dependable food source for the = present and the future," said Dr. James Earl Kennamer, NWTF vice president for conservation programs. Several companies and organizations have offered their support to make this project a success. Those supporters include: The Michigan DNR, Michigan State University Extension, Huron National Forest, Weyerhaeuser, Monsanto, American Cyanamid, Mead Corporation, Cinergy Corporation and Outdoor Life through Ford Trucks.
