Tipton youth wins national scholarshipTipton, Kansas - As part of its efforts to help the best and brightest students pursue careers in conservation, the National Wild Turkey Federation recently named Jonathan May of Tipton, Kan., as the recipient of the 2000 National Wild Turkey Federation National Scholarship. The national scholarship, along with numerous state and local NWTF chapter scholarships, was created to help support students interested in working professionally on behalf of our nation's forests and wildlife. At the turn of the twentieth century, these resources were in peril. The nation's trees and wildlife had been exploited by a populace that saw our country's natural resources as limitless. Fortunately, a renewed concern led by professional wildlife managers reversed this trend which has resulted in more wildlife, cleaner water and healthier forests. If Americans are to continue enjoying the gains made in conservation since that time, it is going to be through the future work of these students. May will receive $5,000 to help cover the cost of his college education. He earned the right for national consideration after winning a $250 local NWTF chapter scholarship followed by the $1,000 NWTF state chapter scholarship awarded by the Kansas State Chapter. "This is a big honor for me and my family, and I can't wait to start working toward my goal of becoming a biologist," said May.
