The wild boar came out of the brush 10 yards from me. When I drew he saw me and angled rigto me.
Here is the break down on the gear we used to pull off this successful bowhunt for Florida Alligator.
Like a giant jumping jack, he dove down and then charged back to the surface, biting wildly. Bowhunting wise, it was a real challenge.
Back at the Team Struttn Ruttn Reeln camp headquarters we took a few pictures of the gator in the daylight.
The gator came up from the bottom with crushing force and bashed into our John boat. The fight was on…
A high bank borders our marsh. Colton unhitched the boat and we drove to where we’d seen the gators earlier.
Colton glassed the gator. A big one. I got my bow and David took the battery powered spot light and we walked toward the gator.
SPLASH !!! And a second big splash let us know that the big gator was out of the water and coming up the bank where we were.
We got in one of David Mull’s big Chevy pickups with huge mud tires and a high lift kit and went “looking for gators.”
We parked behind the pump house on the large irrigation pond and spread out in the reeds. David began a calling
Quickly I zoomed in on the big gator in the slide and took its picture. He ready to make the slide into the water. David drove away and stopped when we were out of sight. The sun was low and David told us we were going to wait until dark and go back for that […]
We dove to Arcadia and ate a huge breakfast. This was our last day alligator hunting and we might have to be out all night. Today in the gator canals was all mine, both Fred and Chef had their gators. If the levees could have spoken they would have said, “Do we have a hunt […]
Today Chef Klaus’s gator luck was gonna change. That right 5 seconds was on its way. We drove the levees again, watching and glassing for gators. We had a few gator sighting and stalks but no success. David turned the truck toward an irrigation pond. This pond was “L” shaped so we didn’t see the […]
Setting up a bow and equipment for alligator hunting takes a little more preparation than setting up a bow for deer hunting. Hunting gators for the first time is also a learning curve. Here is a list of my equipment and a few lessons learned on my first gator hunt. Muzzy Gator Getter Kit: Muzzy […]
Fred Lutger tells us in his own words about the hunt that made him realize why they say alligators are dangerous. I did two things this week I have never done before, I got to ride in an air boat and I saw my first alligator in the wild. Both of these things were on […]
Fred connects on a gator and alligator hell breaks loose. And Fred and Mike get to see what a gator’s snapping jaws look like from inches away. Our nighttime airboat gator hunt was more like my previous hunts in past years. Joe, David and Marty kept their spotlights in motion in an unceasing search for alligator […]
Not getting to sleep after 4-am made us all sleep in past daylight. However, at 9:00 we were getting in David’s truck to drive into Arcadia. The first thing on our agenda was eating breakfast at a place called the Clock (mediocre food, indifferent service). It happens sometimes. Afterward we went to Wal-Mart and stocked up […]
Bowhunting alligators in the dark is a lot different than during the daytime. Finding them in the dark is all about how good your spotlight and flashlight are. When you spot a gator its eyes shine very brightly, otherwise you’d never find them. We worked the channels first and it wasn’t long before we saw […]
Back to the world of bowhunting Florida Alligators. This is the short version so we can get to the night part of our first days hunt. David concentrated on driving the levies along the series of channels in this part of the farm. We drove over half an hour before we saw the first gator. […]
After our failed attempt to tag No-Tail we moved on. Fred, Chef and I didn’t know what David Mills had in store for us yet, but there were plenty of alligators encounters to move on to. David drove to a large irrigation pond and parked. We got out and he carefully Nikoned the water’s edge. He spotted […]
No-Tail lay still in the shade, quite possibly asleep. If Chef got his line back in his real fast enough he could get a second shot. David stepped in and pulled the line out of the water and up the bank. As the Muzzy gator arrow slid through the water plants and brush along the […]
David Mills has hunted alligators in Florida since he was a youngster. He knows as much about them as any man alive today. And he has plenty of things in his bag of gator hunting tricks. As we drove along on one of the levies adjacent to the channels he stopped the Suburban and signaled us to […]
David Mills picked us up at the Fort Myers airport and we drove to Williams Wildlife Preserve near Arcadia, Florida. David Mills drove us to the hunting lodge. We took our luggage and gear into the spacious lodge (6,000 square feet) and talked way longer than we should have, considering we had to get up […]
Today we are busy setting up our bows with bowfishing gear, alligator grade. Here is a pic of Fred Lutger and Chef Klaus (Mike Ditschler) with their bows almoost set up. Tomorrow we fly into Fort Myers, Florida and meet David Millls. From there we will go to Williams Wildlife Preserve in Hendrey county in […]
I drove to Freddie Bear Sports in Tinley Park, Illinois so Fred Lutger and I could get our alligator bowhunting gear all together. We both received Muzzy Gator Getting Kits from Muzzy Products. Inside these boxes are the goodies we need to tangle with Florida alligators. Three of us are going on this gator hunt, […]
Oh boy!!! David Mills called and he has everything set up for a 2010 Alligator Bowhunt for this September. We’ve been on two of those great hunts and covered them as online bowhunts in Bowhunting.net. (To the 1996 alligator hunt. And to the 1997 alligator hunt.) This year both Fred Lutger and myself will meet […]
