Whitetail Fawns

It's that time of year again when white-tailed deer fawns are showing up in backyards and as always concerned citizens want to know what to do. According to many fish and wildlife departments, the best way to help is to simply give the fawn plenty of space and leave it alone.

Many well-intentioned people pick them up and attempt to care for the animal but in doing so they cause an almost certain death sentence for the fawns, especially if they are not quickly returned to where they were found so their mothers can locate them.

It is normal behavior for female deer to stay away from their fawns to avoid leading predators to their location. They will return several times during the day to feed their fawns for just a few minutes. If the doe has seen people in the area, she may wait until after dark before returning.

It is a myth that human scent on the fawn will always cause its mother to abandon it. A fawn that has been handled by people will still be accepted by its mother if it is promptly returned to where it was found. However, fawns raised in captivity have very poor survival rates. In addition, they almost always imprint on humans, making it very difficult to successfully return them to the wild.

The best advice for someone who wants to help wildlife is to help make sure it stays wild.

Brits Go Bonkers

If you thought last months news that some British Doctors want to ban pointed kitchen knifes because of their use by criminals was absurd, wait until you hear this one, now the British government announced that it will press ahead with a ban on the manufacture, import and sale of "realistic" toy, replica and imitation guns.

Officials said the bill will make if perfectly clear that the ban on the sale of replicas only covers imitation guns that "any reasonable person could mistake for a firearm". Ministers have included a number of exemptions in the legislation including the "theatrical use of imitation firearms". They have heard representations from television and film companies who feared the ban could hit the production of crime dramas.

The ban is being introduced after the latest gun crime figures showed a 10% increase in all gun crime. The criminal use of toy guns went up while at the same time the use of real handguns fell by 13% in the last year. Since it is illegal for citizens to own guns and defend themselves, criminals have resorted to using toy guns to avoid stiffer penalties assigned to crimes committed with real guns.

When you wonder what the real end game is for gun control advocates in the US, you only need to look across the pond to our friends in Great Britain. If you are a US citizen and not already a NRA member, now would be a good time to join and make sure this type of nonsense never ends up in our country.

PETA's Dirty Secret - EXPOSED

Hypocrisy is the mother of all credibility problems, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has it in spades. While loudly complaining about the "unethical" treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, hunters, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has attempted to hide its own dirty little secret.

PETA kills animals.

By the thousands.

From July 1998 through the end of 2003, PETA killed over 10,000 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. The group put to death over 85 percent of the animals it took in during 2003 alone. To learn more about this hypocritical organization visit
