Hi, my name is Doug Besherse. Twenty seven years ago I started bowhunting with a Bear Alaskan recurve. At that time I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I sure thought I did though, after all I had hunted deer with a gun and had some sucess so why shouldn't I be able to have sucess bowhunting?
Ah ... ignorance is bliss! Since that time I have been fortunate enough to be able to spend an uncountable number of days bowhunting with either a longbow or recurve.
I have helped hundreds of people switch from a compound to a stick bow and this is one of my specialties. I personally enjoy helping people switch over because I know that if they get the correct advice at the beginning their chances of early sucess are greatly increased. I can also help people solve problems new traditionalists are having with their bow set ups. This I enjoy also, knowing that this too will make them more successful.
During the middle of the 1980's the coumpound bow came to the top of the heap as the preferred weapon for bowhunting. Longbows were virtually non-existent and recurves were felt to be headed for extinction. Archery Pro Shops dropped the reliable recurve like a bad habit opting to only sell the vastly more popular coumpound bows.
It was hard to find even the most basic of recurve accessories. Things came to a head for me the year I drove to six cities looking for a bow string to fit my 58" recurve. My only choice was to have one made . The shop took several weeks to make it and then it didn't fit correctly! I worked around with it and made it "functionable" but to top it off the string came apart while I was hunting! I finished the season with the old string that didn't have any serving and looked like it would explode any second. But I was lucky enough that year to kill a few deer using that pethetic bowstring and after 10 years still have it as a reminder of that bowstring that thrust me thrust into the hunting industry.
During that season I began to think that if I was having trouble getting the most basic of things for a recurve--a string--that surely others were having the same problem. Thus my family started a nation-wide catalog business and named it Besherse Brothers--a business that revolved around what I term "Simple Archery" but it is more commonly called "Traditional Archery".
Besherse Brothers has a reputation as the "go to source" for anything that has to do with traditional archery. Currently we have a wide selection of products for the person who shoots or wants to shoot a recurve or longbow. We are one of the largest sellers of these types of bows whether a person wants a new or used bow. We sell hundreds of used bows each year and have a knowledge of older bows that can be matched by only a handful of archers.
The past several years have been busy ones for Besherse Brothers. We now have one of the only full-time, traditional only, pro-shops in the country. We publish a magazine named Classical Archery Magazine. We also guide bowhunts. Most of the people we guide use tradional gear and from this we gain experience from watching them use their equipment to better teach other customers. We have a manufactuering division called Elk River Archery which produces wooden arrows, flemished bow strings and accessories.
As it pertains to traditional archery, if I had to describe myself I would say that I am well rounded. I cover it from about every angle that it can be covered. God has blessed me throughout my life and continues to bless me now in allowing me to do what I love everyday. He has blessed me with this opportunity to help you with your traditional archery questions and I promise to do the best I can to do just that.
