OK,
I admit it . . . I have been involved in the archery industry almost since
I was born and it wasn’t until a year ago that I first shot a bow.
I know that is pathetic, but I have been busy, honest. Here’s the
story, I think you will like it.
About a year ago, I attended Mike’s Archery, Inc.’s annual Bar-B-Que
in Ironton, Ohio. Mike, Linda, and Bryan Dickess (if you are a dealer

hosted this BBQ for the past six years, entertaining numerous archery industry
associates. There is food (lots of food), music, dancing, and (of
course) the shooting of bows. When I received the invitation last
year it said “bring your bow” and I decided it was time. I called
a friend who works for one of the bow companies. I knew he was planning
on attending and I asked if he could bring me a bow to shoot and show me
how to shoot it.
There I was in the midst of all those people, many were world class
hunters (see the trophies some of them have harvested at www.ezyclimb.com/TrophyRoom.htm),
and I had never shot a bow in my life. My friend took me down to
the target area and patiently showed me how to shoot. I admit it.
I was pretty afraid of that bowstring, especially when he told me to basically
bury the bowstring in my cheek when I drew the bow.
This may sound silly to you experienced archers, but consider my specific
situation. Just about a month before, my brother-in-law nearly lost
his thumb in a crossbow-shooting-accident in the mountains of North Carolina
on a family vacation (but we did all learn what that sticker that says
“keep fingers out of way of string” is for). OK, I had shot a crossbow,
but not a compound bow. Having that bowstring so close to my face
made me VERY nervous. But I pressed on anyway.
We shot for about twenty minutes or so, with varying degrees of success,
and then decided to take a BBQ break and return later.
After eating way too much BBQ, we returned to the shooting lane and
shot for maybe another 20 minutes.
That is when it happened. I shot three arrows right on top of
each other . . . so close together that you couldn’t have even dental flossed
between them. This archery thing really is fun. After all,
I like games I can win at.
