Using Nature To Determine Wind, by Jason Balazs

Isn't it funny how nature always comes through for us? I always watch the weather and ensure that I am, “hunting the wind,” but most of the places that I hunt, the wind swirls and changes just about every second. I have found one way to determine the wind using nature and it won’t cost you a dime.

Try this, the Next time that you are on a walk with your family, scouting, or riding bikes. Plan to go by a swamp area where Cattails grow. Pluck about 3 of these things and let them dry out through the summer and after they are dried, put them in a bag.

When hunting season arrives ensure this bag is in your pack. Once in the stand just pull a little tuft of the, "seed" and let it fly. You will be amazed at how well you can determine the wind direction, and best of all it is free.

NOTE: If you don't have cattails in your area try Dandelions or even cotton wood seeds.
