July 18-19 Timm Getts Hog Hunt By Robert Hoague
Jul 20, 2008 - 6:55:38 AM
Timm arrived between 4:00 and 4:30 in the afternoon. We visited a while and then got
ready to hunt. The temperature was still in the 90's when we went out.
I dropped him off at a new stand I call Super Secret Stand #4. Once he
was up the tree I drove to the Slew Hole area, hid my truck, and walked
to one of the three stands that I have in the woods by a narrow, 40 yard long food plot.
When I wanted to put my release on I got bad news. It was not on the bow, it was on the bow I used in Africa. Rats.
I thought about this situation a while. My choices were that I could sit
here and take pictures ... or leave. I decided to leave. That would put the
least pressure on the area and after all I was returning tomorrow, and
would definitely have my release then.
Meanwhile, Timm was watching deer, beginning 5 minutes after he got in the stand. Here is the hunt report in his own words:
"I was attaching my Hunter Safety System tether to the tree as this
young six point buck came by me at ten yards. Once the tether was
attached I settled slowly into the GameTamer stand. This is a very
comfortable treestand and if you want a treestand that allows you to
stay in your stand for hours or all day this is the one to own."
"My bow was still on the haul line and I waited until the buck moved
behind some brush and carefully pulled up my bow. In minutes does
and fawns starting making there way toward my stand location. Soon I
counted a total of five doe and three fawns around me. "
"I noticed that a lone doe used body language that indicated something
else was moving toward us. About ten minutes later a very nice eight
point came into view."
"All of the deer browsed in the area for 45 minutes. It was great to
have all this action going on around me. Watching these animals made
the trip worth it. Around 8:00PM the deer got nervous. All the deer turned to the east and a huge black wild boar hog was walking
down the fence line towards us. This was what I was hunting for.
"This boar was over 250lbs and the deer wanted no part of him. A doe
signaled the alert and that is it for the deer, they left immediately.
I grabbed my bow in hopes of getting a shot off on this large hog. The
boar walked around my tree, but never presented me with a shot."
"The hog walked off into the brush and the deer came back. Robert
arrived at dark and the deer eased off into the shadows. I climbed
down and shared the exciting news about the action I had this evening."
While we drove into town Timm told me about his hunt and how he almost got a chance at a big
boar. We arrived to late to eat at a restaurant and found a Subway that was still open.
The next morning we drove
around near, and on the roads inside, a corn field -- figuring we would locate some wild hogs
some place in there or on the parameter. Here is Timm cutting up with
an ear of corn.
And here he is working through the corn on the lookout for wild hogs.
We did the corn field thing for a couple of hours but we didn't locate any hogs. However, we saw quite a few deer.
Then we drove into town and ate breakfast at the Lil Tex Restaurant. I had a Sausage Skillet and it was very good.
Afterward, we had a business meeting. Timm is in charge of several
Sticks N Limbs camo projects and we discussed them. (Sticks N Limbs is
my own camouflage design.) Then we planned out our internet marketing
for the rest of 2008 and tossed around some ideas for next year as well.
Then it was time go out and hog hunt again. CONTINUED...
