Online Hunter Education in Michigan
The
Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that hunters can now use the
Internet to complete a part of their hunter education course. The online course
can be found at the DNR's new Hunter Education Web Page at www.michigan.gov/dnr. “The online course
is not intended to replace traditional hunter education classes, but it can be
effective in reaching more youngsters," said Lt. Sherry Chandler, supervisor of
the DNR's hunter education section. "I am confident this teaching method will
produce students who will be every bit as safe, responsible and knowledgeable as
the students who attend traditional classes."

Lab
testing has identified the first occurrence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in
a wild Kansas deer. Tissue samples from a whitetail doe taken by a hunter in
northwest Kansas during the December firearms season tested positive for CWD in
initial lab testing at Kansas State University. The tissue sample was then
tested at a U.S. Department of Agriculture lab in Ames, Iowa, where it was
confirmed. For more information on the disease, visit the Chronic Wasting
Disease Alliance website.
Despite Cheney Accident, Hunting is Safe...
Anti-gun groups, political opponents, late night TV show hosts and
newspaper editorial writers wasted no time in criticizing Dick Cheney after the
vice president's recent unfortunate hunting accident in Texas. The vice
president was hunting quail when he fired his shotgun and accidentally peppered
another member of his party with birdshot.
Unreported or ignored in many news accounts is the fact that hunting
accidents are not common, and that hunting ranks as a very safe activity.
There are an estimated 17.9 million active
hunters living in the USA, yet when you check the facts here were only 806
hunting accidents in the most recent reporting year.

Miller of Portage Wisconsin wrote to the Blood Trails Newsletter and asked if we
could provide information on the lifespan of whitetail deer in the wild. For the
answer we refer to the Team Whitetail Fanatic Resource Center. Click here for
