No, they
are not albinos! Unlike an albino that has pink eyes due to no coloration, these
deer have normal brown eyes. They reside on a military base in Western New York
State and are believed to be the world's only population of white deer
(Odocoileus virginianus)
Seneca
White Deer, Inc., a not for profit corporation, is committed to the life and
habitat of these deer as well continuing with an annual hunt to maintain a
quality herd of deer and to keep the gene pool viable. Visit their website: www.senecawhitedeer.org
Deer crashes through apartment window
Jerry
Falkner of Racine WI woke up to the sound of breaking glass and thought someone
was breaking into his apartment.
Jerry
came out of his bedroom, saw a deer in his apartment, and immediately went back
into the bedroom and closed the door. The deer then ran into the bathroom, and
Jerry cleverly locked it inside, not knowing his pit bull, Shadow, was in the
bathroom with the deer. Then all hell broke loose!
In the
bathroom, the deer kicked on the water, flooding the apartment and forcing
authorities to shut off power and water to the building. The dog was knocked
unconscious for at least 10 minutes. It had a serious injury to its eye, along
with other injuries, but was later wagging its tail and moving under its own
power.
Police
arrived and, with the apartment residents' help, were able to get the dog out of
the bathroom, leaving the deer confined. Officers from the Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources then tranquilized the 1-year-old doe and took it
away.
The deer
laid waste to the Falkners' bathroom and caused flooding in the apartment that
left it temporarily uninhabitable. Falkner’s children, ages 5 & 6 were
asleep in a nearby room and were unharmed.
A Dart Tournament Targeting Live Deer, Behind High Fence, on
Pay-Per-View
The World
Hunting Association (WHA) has announced plans to create a competitive
hunting tour around the world, with the inaugural season beginning this fall.
The first 2 events have a purse of $500,000 dollars!
The WHA
has a website with a mission statement that
“promises to take hunting to a new level by creating a competitive tour that
showcases the sport’s finest hunters competing for hundreds of thousands of
dollars in prize money.” WHA plans to broadcast tour events on the Internet,
television, Pay-Per-View, etc….
During
each hunt the WHA promises to use a patent-pending, non-fatal tranquilizing
technique (aka: non-fatal tranquilizing darts) that will not cause any harm to
the animals. There will be veterinarians on site to care for the animals
immediately following the shot, presumably to remove the dart and etc. (by the
way, would participation in this be a violation of the Veterinarian’s code of
ethics?) All WHA events will be held at locations that meet state requirements
for tranquilizing.
The 2006
inaugural tour is to kick off this fall in Gladwin, MI at the Lost Arrow Ranch
(a high-fence operation).
The WHA
is drawing fire from sportsmen’s groups for what many feel are a violation of
standard hunting ethics. At the time of this report, most of the WHA’s sponsors
have pulled out and are now trying to put distance between themselves and the
WHA.
Note:
In
regards to the WHA, Tom Fassbinder, Whitetail Fanatic CEO stated “While I
support all efforts to increase hunter recruitment and retention I don’t think
WHA attempt to professionalize the hunt meet the proper ethical standards of
true hunters. The WHA proposal goes well beyond the ethical issues of game farms
and high fences; it represents a leap across ethical boundaries that were
previously unimaginable. Whitetail Fanatic Magazine, as always, encourages
hunters to respect the quarry and always follow FAIR CHASE criteria.
Chronic Wasting Disease Not Found In Massachusetts Deer
No
evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) was detected in Massachusetts deer
based on data gathered during the 2005 hunting season. Massachusetts Wildlife
officials recently received results from a federally certified veterinary
diagnostic laboratory that indicate that all the deer brain, lymph node, and
tonsil samples taken during last fall's hunting season tested negative for the
disease. During the fall 2005 deer hunting season, Massachusetts Wildlife
collected 577 samples from hunter-harvested, roadkilled and targeted deer across
the state for CWD testing. This was the fourth year of sampling in Massachusetts
as part of a nationwide CWD monitoring and surveillance program.
Iowa Mountain Lion Presence Confirmed, Then
Retracted?
Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)
biologists initially called a dead deer found in rural Marshall County a
confirmed mountain lion kill. The deer was found on private land about 2 miles
northwest of Bangor by the landowner early Tuesday morning. A wildlife
management biologist for the area said the marks on the deer and the condition
it was found in, are consistent with a cat kill. The claw marks on the hind
quarters and neck, puncture wounds to the neck and head, and the fact the
150-plus-pound deer was drug 50 yards to some pine trees indicated to the
biologists it was a mountain lion kill.
A few
days later it was reported that further investigation by an expert indicated
that the deer was killed by a coyote or dog, not by a mountain lion.
In
October 2004, a mountain lion was confirmed in the area from a photograph taken
by a trail camera. To date, there have been two mountain lions shot, one road
killed and one photographed in the same general area, along with six confirmed
mountain lion tracks.
