2008 Newsletter - Elk Hunts
Dear Bowhunting.net Visitor:
For some, the sound of the wilderness is the cry of the loon. To others, it
is the howl of a wolf. However, here in the West, what gets our blood boiling is
the shrill bugle of the bull elk. To us, no sound in the outdoor world
compares. Stick & String Outfitters offers several excellent archery elk hunts in Colorado, New
Mexico, and Montana. Details of all the hunts are listed below and they are
organized by price. All of the hunts we offer are with experienced outfitters
that cater to bowhunters, have excellent trophy quality, and have relatively
high success rates. Some of the hunts have better trophy quality than others
which is generally reflected by the price.
Also, some of the hunts have limited draw licenses and some are available
over the counter. Generally the Colorado hunts have over the counter licenses,
the Montana hunts have guaranteed outfitter-sponsored licenses, and the New
Mexico hunts are limited draw or have landowner permits available included in
the price of the hunt.
Come join us for the hunt of a
lifetime!
Hunt #1 - Northwest Montana Public
Land Elk Hunt (Low Pressure)
Our outfitter has a vast amount of private land along with National
Forests of Montana, which produces trophy class animals year after year. Located
in Northwestern Montana, our outfitter's hunting lodge and permitted area is
located 70 miles south of British Columbia, approximately 2 1/2 hours from
Missoula, MT. If flying this is where airport pickup will occur.
Our outfitter is permitted to guide on over a million acres of land in the
Kootenai National Forest including the Cabinet Wilderness Area, a very wild and
remote area.
The terrain is mountainous with thick timber, deep valleys, and steep
mountains. This combination of terrain leads to excellent trophy quality because
the bulls can reach maturity. Bowhunting during the rut is the best way to
harvest one of these trophy bulls.
Due to the remoteness of the area and the deep, steep and thick terrain, the
area has some of the best trophy quality in Montana with mature bulls ranging
from about 280 up to nearly 400 inches. The largest archery bull shot to date is
360 but bulls over 380 have been shot with firearms. The bull to cow ratio is an
excellent 30/100 and the elk population is at an all time high.
Nonresident licenses in Montana are guaranteed, the application deadline is
March 17, and the cost for an elkcombo license is $1400.
6 Day 2x1 Elk Hunt
$3000
Hunt #2 - Private Land Colorado Elk
Hunts
One of the best elk hunts we offer. This is an incredible private land
Colorado elk hunt for an unbeatable price. Our outfitter leases about 20,000
acres of exclusive private land in the foothills of north central Colorado.
His success rate is unmatched. In 2007, he had 16 archery hunters and all
but two of them got shots at mature bulls and the others passed shots at smaller
bulls! That's a 100% shot opportunity! His ranches have excellent
trophy quality for Colorado standards. The majority of bulls taken are Pope
& Young bulls or big 5-points and some bulls exceed 350 inches! Our
outfitter only takes 2 hunters per week on the properties.
The units are limited draw but are easy to draw and there are even leftover
licenses each year that can be obtained after the draw. The application
deadline is April 1 and the nonresident fee is $526.
Food and lodging is extra but are relatively inexpensive. The local motel
charges $55/night which can be split with your hunting partner.
5 Day Private Land Elk Hunts
(2x1) $4000, (1x1)
$5000
Hunt #3 - Saskatchewan Indian Reservation Hunts - 10 days for only $4000!
Our
Saskatchewan outfitter guides on a large Indian Reservation (28,000 acres) and
has one opening left for 2008. Only native Americans are allowed to guide on
the Reservation and our outfitter has exclusive rights. Our outfitter is a
serious bowhunter himself and the shot opportunity has been 100% on mature
bulls. Trophy quality is excellent and a mature bull is considered a big
5-point or better and bulls over 300 inches are not uncommon.
The country is not too rugged but the forest very dense which is beneficial
to calling bulls in close. Calling is very effective as the elk receive very
little pressure.
10 Day Indian Reservation 1x1 Hunt
$4000
Hunt #4 - SW Montana Private Land Elk
Hunts
The 70,000 acres of private ranch
land near White Sulphur Springs is home to one of the highest concentrations of
elk in the state of Montana. Hunts have been conducted in this area by our
outfitter since 1967 with a success rate ranging between 65% and 94% on elk over
this period of time. The ranches in this area are home to some of the most
panoramic scenery in Montana. In this area clients may choose to hunt elk,
white tail, mule deer, or antelope. Average elk range in size from
280-320.
Hunters will fly into Bozeman,
Montana where they will be picked up at the airport. Accommodations are clean
and comfortable.
Nonresident licenses in Montana are guaranteed, the
application deadline is March 17, and the cost for an elk/deer combo license is
$1500.
7 day 1x1 Elk/Deer Combo Hunt
$4550
Hunt #5 - New Mexico Public and Private
Land Hunts
This hunt is with one of
the best elk outfitters in New Mexico. They have been running their operation
for over 10 years and have several different options for public and private land
trophy elk hunts. The trophy quality in New Mexico is second to none with
mature bulls generally ranging from 320 to 390 inches. Opportunities for
300-inch plus bulls are very realistic for hunters that come in shape. Our
outfitter caters to bowhunters and has extensive experience guiding archers.
Many nationally-known bowhunting celebrities have hunted with our outfitter and
filmed television hunting shows. This is an excellent opportunity to take a
monster bull with a bow. Licenses on private land are guaranteed and licenses
on public land are issued on a drawing basis or you can purchase a landowner
tag.
The Sacramento
Mountains of south-central New Mexico are the setting for the most exciting elk
hunting available in the west. The country ranges in elevation from 7,000 feet
to over 11,500 feet. The terrain consists of deep canyons and ridges of black
timber, aspens and oaks mixed with alpine meadows. These mountains are
contiguous with the renowned Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation and comprise
the southernmost range of the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico.
Hunters
who show up in shape can generally expect to get shot opportunities at P&Y
caliber bulls. Although any bull is a trophy with a bow, the 260 to 360-class
bulls are the object of this hunt. On the average, 4 out of every 5 prepared
hunters will get that opportunity.
6 Day Public Land Draw Hunt (1x1)
$4900
This is a draw hunt and the odds of drawing
are about 1 in 4. The application deadline is April 9 and the permit fee is
$766.
6 Day Private or Public Land Hunt w/ Landowner
Permit (1x1) $7900
Booked for 2008
On
this hunt, the 2007 archery season produced four bulls that scored over 320 out
of six hunters. The landowner permit is included in the hunt price and
the state permit fee is
$555.
Hunt #6 -
Northern New Mexico Private Land Hunts (landowner permit included)
We have a new excellent archery outfitter in
northern New Mexico and the landowner
permit is included in the price of the hunt so you don't need to worry
about drawing a tag. Our outfitter leases approximately
70,000-acres of private exclusive land in north central New Mexico in 10
different game management units, some of which border the Jicarilla Indian
Reservation. The closest towns include Chama, Las Vegas, and
Raton.
Our outfitter is an avid bowhunter himself (22 years) and
specializes in guiding archery hunters. He was also on the
Prostaff for Hunter Specialties for years and is an excellent
caller.
Bulls generally range from 265-320 inches with
the occasional monster bull over 350. This means the vast majority
of bulls taken make the Pope & Young record book. These hunts
also have an incredible success rate for archery. The shot
opportunity, meaning a bull standing broadside from 0-40 yards, has ranged from
a whopping 80-92% over the last 3 years!
Hunt #1 - Sept. 5-9, 2008 (5 days)
$4300
The elk should be bugling during this hunt but
not as much as the later hunts. Hunting will be by spot and stalk,
calling, and treestands over water holes.
MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. If you don't have a
reasonable shot opportunity at a legal bull on this hunt, the outfitter will
refund $1000 at the end of the hunt.
Again, all these hunts include the landowner permit so you
don't need to worry about drawing a tag. You just need to purchase
a New Mexico elk permit which ranges from $550 to $756 depending on the
hunt. These hunts are 2x1 guided. Add $900 for 1x1
guided.
We have a new awesome bowhunting-only elk property in eastern
Montana with monster bulls. Our Montana outfitter has just leased 18,000-acres
of private land in one of the best trophy elk areas in Montana in the eastern
part of the state
Harold Knight of Knight & Hale with a nice
bull
east of Billings. This area is world-renowned for trophy elk and is
near where Chuck Adams shot the world record. There will only be a very limited
number of bowhunters on the ranch. The property is BOWHUNTING-ONLY and the bulls
are huge, with mature bulls ranging from about 340 to 400 inches!
Elk licenses are guaranteed under the oufitter-sponsored licensing
program and the application deadline is March 17 and the cost for an elk/deer
combo license is $1500.
This may be your best chance to take one of those monster bulls we all see in
the magazines.
I will personally be going on this hunt this year from Sept. 21-27 and
there is one opening left. Or there are other openings for other dates.
7-Day Fully-Guided Elk/Deer Combo 1x1 Hunt
