A Great Colorado Cancellation Elk
I just got a call from one of my best Colorado outfitters saying that a
group of hunters cancelled on one of his archery elk hunts. My outfitter rated
this hunt as a "spectacular elk hunt" and one of the best he has ever offered.
Also an excellent price. The hunters who had to cancel have been hunting there
for years and usually don't give up the slot. This is the old-fashioned, more
primitive type elk hunt. Here are the details.
The hunt is near Rifle, CO and is on 3500 acres of private land and another
7,000 acres of roadless area. Hunting pressure is almost non-existent.
Licenses are available over the counter.
One archery hunter last year shot a 360 bull there are there are several 300
inch plus bulls. Shot opportunity usually runs 95-100% which is unheard of for
archery elk. Usually you should see or hear 5-20 bulls per day.
The camp is a tent camp (9500 ft. elevation) and you would ride in about
2-1/2 hours on horseback. Hunting is generally on foot though so you would want
to be in good shape. There is also an old cabin and hunters generally bounce
back and forth between the two camps so as not to over pressure the elk.
Hunting is generally done by calling, spot and stalk, and treestands and
blinds over water and wallows.
The hunt price is only $3500 for 5 days 2x1. Food for camp will be the
responsibility of the hunters and cooking will be done by the hunters and
guide. Most of the time you will be hunting though.
The last week of the season is available which I consider the best week for
Colorado. Hunt dates are Sept. 22-26 and there is room for 3-4
As I mentioned, this is a top-quality hunt and once you do it, you will
probably want to come back every year and won't give up your
