Dale Palmer - Owl Hooting Division Winner By Fred Lutger

The nicest part of having a job like mine is the opportunity to meet some great people. Today I met a really great person, Dale Palmer.
Fred Lutger interviewing Dale Palmer, the NWTF Grand National Owl Hooting Champion.
Dale is a fellow Illinoisan, residing in Mancey, Illinois near Harrisburg. Mancey is at the other end of the state from me, it is in the coal mining regions of Illinois. I live southwest of the windy city -- in the windy politicians area of Illinois, I guess that makes both areas similar, coal produces heat and the Illinois politicians produce hot air.
That aside, Dale Palmer just won his 4th coveted title as Grand National Owl Hooting Champion. Dale is the developer and name sake of the Palmer Hoot Tube, currently marketed and sold through Hunter Specialties. It so happens it is the owl call I use.
I have tried many owl calls over the years and word of mouth from turkey hunting friends led me to the Palmer Hoot Tube.
I asked Palmer about turkey hunting opportunities in Southern Illinois.
"It is great," Dale replied. "I have seen the hunting get better over the years, the population is up and the turkey hunting is great."
Dale remarked that his most fun while turkey hunting is guiding new hunters to their first bird. "It's better then shooting one myself. The joy of seeing a hunter I've guided connect with a gobbler is the ultimate. I'm really excited for them."
I asked Dale about his turkey hunting setup.
"Sit against a tree wider than your shoulders. I use two Feather Flex decoys, a hen and a jake. I like to use a Double Bull blind when I am guiding and when I bowhunt."
Here is a brief video of Dale Palmer sharing his best Owl Hooting tip with you to use when hunting wild turkey.
Palmer hunts with a muzzleloader when not bowhunting turkeys. Dale added, "I like the late season in Illinois. The gobblers are more aggressive and easier to locate."
I have to admit that listening to Dale Palmer imitate an owl impressed not only me but also the judges at this year's Owl Hooting National Competition. Dale also impressed me with his friendly manner. It is nice meeting new friends and now I have a face to go along with my Palmer Hoot Tube.
