Day 6 Afternoon: we didn’t see
anything. The weather was a little nicer and promised to be better for day 7.
Day 7: We got an early start today,
about 5 am. The weather was beautiful and the water was slick as a coffee
table. What a great day to be in the boat. Our cruising route took us through
a lot of the same country we had traveled so many times. Today was different
however; we started to see bears shortly after leaving camp. The bad news was
that most of them were sows with cubs or juvenile bears and although juvenile
bears are legal to shoot, we did not consider them to be the type of trophy we
wanted.
Toward the end of the day, we saw a
couple of bears on a small peninsula finger sticking out into the bay. They
looked like they might be shooters so we unloaded onto the skiff and took off.
You talk about a perfect ambush spot. The entrance to the peninsula was only 40
yards wide. As soon as we got a better look we could tell we didn’t want to
shoot these bears. One was about 7 foot and the other 6 foot. So we decided to
sneak as close as we could and take some videos. At 15 yards one of them
spotted us, he ran to the far end of the peninsula and alerted his buddy. The
two of them ran off passing within 20 yards of us. We got some great pictures.
Despite the setback caused by the terrible weather at the beginning of the hunt,
we have seen 18 bears.
The weather has been so beautiful
we’re hopefully it will stay that way a little longer. This country is
magnificent. Alaska is God’s country. I want to share some
of the scenery pictures with you. Unfortunately most of our bear pictures are
on mini DV.
You don’t want to miss Day 8, which
is when I am writing this. We have a lot of action and some great pictures.
