Opening Afternoon - The Duck Strikes By Robert Hoague
Sep 28, 2008 - 11:23:47 AM
Meanwhile, the Duck (Don Beckwith) hunted in his ladderstand by the Dry
Tank. During the afternoon he saw 6 does and 2 bucks. But they all
walked by behind his tree.
Half an hour before dusk distant hog squeals put Don on the ready. Soon
after, a group of wild hogs came out of the brush to the West on a
trail that led to Don's immediate area. The group had a few 80 pounders
and two big adults. When they were in range the Duck took aim on a big
black hog and shot it. A perfect hit. The hog's all ran away to the
North.
Minutes later another hog group came from the East, the direction of
the Dry Tank (which is not dry right now). A big multi-colored hog was
in the rear and Don waited for a chance to shoot as the others filed by
on a trail in front of his stand. The Duck drew just before the multi
colored hog walked into a shooting lane and when it stepped into the
clear Don took the shot.
The hogs hurried away in the direction of the Dry Tank. But crashing
sounds in the brush after the group was gone let Don know the
Multi-Colored hog was down.
The Duck waited 15 minutes and took up the track. The hog was 35 yards
away, piled up in the thick brush. Then he looked for the other hog. But in
the fading daylight he could not find any blood or the hog. He stopped
looking and returned to the Multi-Colored hog and tied his pull rope to
it. But the hog was too heavy to pull out by himself. He drove back to
my house.
The next morning we went to recover the Duck's two wild hogs. Since he knew where the Multi-Colored hog was we went to it first and took pictures.

With that out of the way we went to the Duck's ladderstand area and he pointed out the way the hogs had gone. Robbie found a blood smear on a blade of grass by a trail that went the way the hogs had. He saw a couple more smears in the next 10 yards and noticed the hog wedged up in some brush to the left of the trail.

The Duck's Equipment & Comments:
Using the Innerloc EXP 3-blade expandable broadheads the Duck bagged these two wild hogs. Added together, the two hogs went only 50 yards. His bow is a hard hitting, accurate BowTech Patriot. He shoots with a string loop and used the Jim Fletcher Fletch-Hook release. He used carbon arrows with 4-inch vanes and his BowTech is set at 50 pounds. His camouflage was Sticks N Limbs and he has worn only that camo since it was first made because, "Nothing sees me when I wear it. Any time of the year."
