Wild Hog Hunting 2000

Wild Hog Highways...
The Island is a secluded wooded area in a 200 acre field of farm crops. Right now it is surrounded on every side by an ocean of Sudan hay that was left standing last month when the crop was harvested. (It was trashed out when the river went out in June.) The sudan is high. Just so you can see how high I snapped this photo. My truck is 6 foot tall and the sudan is still a little higher than it is.

Ordinarily the entire field would be cropped almost to the ground and waiting for the plow and the Fall crop. There would be no cover for hundreds of yards.

But that's not the case right now.

Right now the hogs can come and go at will, without being seen. There is plenty for them to root up and lots of sudan to eat. The wild hog population is definitely having a feast here.

For the time being ...

I wanted to see where the hogs are coming into the Island, if it looks good I want to set up there too. The tractor mowed down a wide path around the Island's perimeter so I drove it, looking for sign. As I mentioned before, there are places where the sudan has been tramped down by hogs as they come from and go into the dense sudan.

Some of the paths are highways (the hog ones) and some are narrow trails (the deer ones). I made note of a highway sized trail that had a large grove of sumac trees near it. A perfect place for a tripod. (I had the tripod in the truck but it was getting late afternoon and I want to hunt today so I'll wait to set the tripod up.) If you want to see it better, here's a full size picture of this Wild Hog Highway.

RECAP:

  1. From the size of the wallow and rooted area I'm confident there is a very large hog population hanging out in our area.
  2. We have a temporary situation -- because the sudan will die. Then it will be shredded and plowed under for the Fall's oat or winter wheat crop. When that happens this scenario is over.
  3. So a window of opportunity is wide open, right now. It won't last long because my neighbor normally prepares the fields for harvest in late August.
