July 8, 2003 - I got to the Hammer Hole early. While I waited several deer snorted and spooked. My scent elimination program was not working so hot today and I considered leaving. But I didn't. Good thing too, because near the end of shooting light I heard grunts and growls of wild hogs and they were getting closer. A bunch of young hogs, 30 at least, came down the nearest trail to me, 5 yards away. The deep grunts and growls continued and got nearer. Then two big hogs walked into the open on the next nearest trail, 15 yards from me, and one of them, a gray one, stopped broadside. White tusks stuck out of it's mouth. I drew and aimed. The hog turned slightly quartering away. Still perfect. I touched my release trigger and my arrow went behind the left leg and out in front of the right leg. A heart shot, I thought. |
The hogs charged into their
back trail. In the mix of noise I heard a crash that could have been my
hog going down, but I wasn't certain. Eight minutes later I climbed down
-- while I could still see. I made a circle in the brush and didn't find
anything. But I believe I can find it in the morning.
July 9, Morning: I started down the same trail the gray hog had taken yesterday afternoon. Fifty yards later I saw it on the far side of a clump of trees that I had walked by as it was getting dark yesterday. Another 4 yards and I would have stepped on it. It was a big sow and had inch and a half tusks. Very fat and heavy too, I worked up a soaking wet sweat getting it on its belly and set up so I could take a picture. I returned to my truck for the camera, tripod and cooler. I took a few pictures of myself with the time delay and then I butchered the hog right there. It took two trips to get all the meat out. |
