Next Day - Saturday
On their morning hunts Zano
and Timm saw hogs but didn't get one. When they returned to camp Rhonda
Carpenter had a tasty breakfast ready for all of us. Then Billy Don, Zano,
Timm, Russell Carpenter and I l all loaded into one of the ranch's big
4-door diesel trucks and we went sight seeing.
We saw several fawns on this
trip and here is the first -- standing in the shadows of a large tree close
to the ranch road we were on.
I zoomed in closer and got
a better picture of the fawn. It has a swollen bump below its jaw.
We saw several groups of
wild hogs on our trip. They were all traveling somewhere and I figure this
picture of hogs that crossed the road ahead of us covers it.
Below we have two does and
3 fawns. They were back in the woods but my zoom caught them as we went
by. Check the lower to the ground deer with the spots.
The ranch has a resident
herd of asian Water Buffalo.
A little ways past the Water
Buffalo we saw a cow with a new born calf. The cow is cleaning up the calf,
which was born within the hour.
And not too far away we
saw a larger mature Water Buffalo. This particular one had charged Billy
Don's Kubota 6 wheeler two days ago. It watched us pass by without incident.
Here we are getting a cool,
refreshing drink from the clear water of one of the springs on the ranch.
Zano took a picture while we relaxed.
In another part of the ranch
we saw another fawn making its exit.
A doe stands still and as
we drive by and I take its picture.
The afternoon hunt got Zano
and Timm into wild hogs but neither hunter brought any back to camp. Dinner
was steaks from the grill, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Real good
stuff. For desert Rhonda brought out a monster dish of her Banana Pudding.
Man it was good. No body went to bed hungry.
Arrival Day & First
Hunt
Friday afternoon Billy Don
Van Cleave, Timm Getts and I met in Lampassas at the local good food place,
the Country Kitchen. I had BBQ and frankly it was kinda bland. But the
pinto beans, pickled beets and pea salad was as good as they get. Afterward
we drove to Wild Horse Prairie Ranch and unloaded our gear in Billy Don's
roomy lodge.
Zano arrived in time for
the afternoon's hunt and Billy Don took Timm to his stand. On the way to
Zano's stand they saw hogs at a feeder and Zano got out to put a stalk
on them. When Billy Don returned to the lodge he and I discussed plans
for the 2007
Bowhunting.net Bowhunt at White Horse Prairie Ranch.
Zano stalked up to a group
of hogs at a feeder. He took their picture and slowly eased in for a shot.
That afternoon both Timm
and Zano got shots but only Timm brought a hog back to camp to hang in
the walk in cooler.
