Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
"To shoot or not to shoot, that is the question?" It is the single most important decision you make when you bowhunt. Try to shoot at the wrong time and you'll spook the game instead of harvesting it. Waiting for a better shot can easily backfire and leave you thinking you should have taken that shot when you had the chance. And there are times when the only thing to do is pass and let the animal go it's own way.

#10 Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
Ringggg! You click your alarm clock off and immediately hear the wind blowing outside. It's a late fall, cold and windy morning. You're feeling sleepy and would like to grab some shut eye instead of being blasted by the frosty wind. The last two morning hunts you saw a bomber, heavy antlered buck from one of your treestands, but it was 50 yards away and out of bow range. You moved your treestand yesterday afternoon and feel you are optimistic. So you're not missing today's morning hunt.
All is well as you step onto your tree stand platform 40 minutes before day break. In minutes you hear a group of deer walk through the area. They are close but it's too dark to see them. The wind settles. Perfect. Two more times you hear a deer walking around under you in the dark.
Daybreak comes and as the area slowly fills with daylight you notice two bucks in the distance. You watch them intently. Suddenly, a movement on the ground, 14 yards from the base of your tree draws your attention. The first thing you see is the antlers ... and you follow them down to the body of the buck. Wow, it is the buck you are looking for! Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait? (1024x768) (800x600) (640x480)

This last bow season I I got this picture while I was bowhunting at the Bucks Alley stand. I took several pics of these 4 deer; two does and two young bucks -- as they browsed around my area. Later, when I saw this pic I thought, "This is excellent for Shoot? Pass? or Wait?" The deer are 10-15 yards from the stand. Look at each deer individually and judge for yourself if you have a shot at it or not. Select (800x600) or (640x480)

Through the limbs of the tree your treestand is in you notice a nice buck has slipped up on you and is standing inside the edge of the cover, looking the area over. You are ready to shoot but you need the buck to walk another 5 yards for a clear shot. Unexpectedly, the buck turns and begins walking back into the brush. Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait? Select 800x600 or 640x480.

You've got one doe tag to fill and you wait patiently in your treestand, 16 feet above the ground, for an opportunity. There was a heavy morning dew and the damp woods is unusually quiet. You don't hear a sound but when you look to your far left you see two does 12 yards away. Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait? (800x600) (640-480)

It's mid October and the weather is finally cooling off. Some of the bucks are already chasing but it is all for show, so far. Deer aren't moving too good in the morning so you make a change and hunt from 11 to 2, just to see what happens. But nothing moves and you are antsy at 1:00. Getting down early sounds like a good idea so you reach to take your arrow off the rest. Crunch!! You look to see what it is, knowing that "it ain't anything". But it is, 10 yards away. Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait?

Deer season starts off with hot weather and this afternoon is no exception. In spite of all your efforts to reduce your scent you feel sweat beads dripping down your lower back and on your forehead. You hear a grunt and a deer's foot steps close by. You look in that direction. Antlers, it's a buck!!!  Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
#4 - Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
Rinngggg! The alarm wakes you and you get ready for your morning hunt. One of your buddies arrives late and when he drops you off near your stand you can already see a faint band of light on the distant horizon -- even though it is over an hour before sunrise. You pull your bow up and as you nock an arrow you hear a deer's footsteps coming toward you. You see it's shadowy movement in the low light as it gets closer. Below you, the ground is still dark and you just can't make it out clearly. But when it is 10 yards away the deer turns just right and catches the faint light just enough to illuminate it. Antlers, it's a buck!!! Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
#3 - Shoot, or Pass ... or Wait? - After your morning deer hunt you walk along in the woods, looking for deer trails, rubs and other deer sign. Something up ahead catches your attention. You look through the trees  to see what it is. How many (of what) do you see? You have all the proper tags and licenses to harvest all legal wild game and it is bow season only. Do your Shoot? Pass? or Wait?  Go(800x600) or (640x480)
#2 - Shoot, or Pass ... or Wait?
Your treestand is in a tree right on the edge of a woods road, a one laner that is 6 yards wide. Your side of the woods is heavily wooded but the opposite side has a small clearing. As the morning fog begins to lift you hear noise in the leaves on your side of the road, heading in the direction of the clearing. Then you hear steps in the road and the sound tells you a deer is crossing  it. You peer intently through the limbs and leaves, trying, unsuccessfully, to see it. Suddenly, movement in the opening catches your eye. You look.
1. What and how many do you see?
2. Do you shoot? (If so at what?) Or do you Pass? Or do you Wait?

You're getting restless sitting in your treestand. So you slowly stretch out your right leg. Ahhh, it feels good. A deer snorts at you! Loudly, but only once. You freeze and use your eyes to scan the area the sound came from, hoping you weren't identified. Once you locate the deer, do you shoot right now? Pass this shot? Or wait and see what the deer does next? Look it over, decide, and find out if we agree.
