To Shoot? Pass? or Wait? #6
Shoot? Pass? or Wait?
#6
It's
mid October and the weather is finally cooling off. Some of the bucks are
already chasing but it is all for show, so far. Deer aren't moving too
good in the morning so you make a change and hunt from 11 to 2, just to
see what happens. But nothing moves and you are antsy at 1:00. Getting
down early sounds like a good idea so you reach to take your arrow off
the rest. Crunch!! You look to see what it is, knowing that "it ain't anything".
But it is, 10 yards away. Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait? |
SHOOT?
PASS?
or WAIT?
-
Do you Shoot? Check the
look on this buck's face and it's posture. I call this the "buck walk."
It's how they go around when they are traveling with a purpose. Not fast,
not slow, but steady. A buck in this travel mode can surprise you and walk
right by you if you're not ready. But, of course, you are ready. As long
as you are confident shooting at a moving target draw your bow right now
and "sort this out at full draw." This is a close shot so leading is minimal.
Look where his right front leg joins the body and follow it straight up,
see the creases in his muscles, they look like a half moon, aim on the
left edge of the "moon", half the way up the body. You'll hit 2 inches
further back. A perfect double lunger.
-
Pass? If you have not
practiced shooting moving targets OR if you've practiced but you are not
confident that you can hit a moving animal -- don't shoot. Pass.
-
Wait? There is no reason
to wait. Every step the buck takes it gets further away. This buck is not
going to give you a better shot than this.
