Back To Shoot? Pass? or Wait? #7

Shoot? Pass? or Wait? #8
Through the limbs of the tree your treestand is in you notice a nice buck has slipped up on you and is standing inside the edge of the cover, looking the area over. You are ready to shoot but you need the buck to walk another 5 yards for a clear shot. Unexpectedly, the buck turns and begins walking back into the brush. Do you Shoot? Pass? or Wait?

SHOOT? PASS? or WAIT?
  • Shoot? Not a good idea. Your arrow is going to hit a limb.
  • Pass? You have to pass. Never take the chance of wounding an animal.
  • Wait? Yes, wait. It is not impossible that the buck will return, although the chances definitely are slim.
  • Can You Make The Buck Return? That depends on your level of experience. You do have a decent chance of making the buck return. It is not spooked. He walked up and you don't have any does in your area so he left.
A doe grunt will get his attention and could turn him. A buck grunt could work also, but I'd bet on the doe grunt. Let him walk out of your sight and grunt right away. Do not aim your grunter at him! You will give yourself away. Aim it at the ground or to your left. Don't get nuts either, grunt once and shut up. If you don't see him in one minute grunt again.
Another technique that sometimes works is to tickle the tines of rattling horns together. Again, it has to be brief.
