For Deer 2005: a photo journey

(May 20) Setting Up The Slew Hole
To check for deer as well as wild hog
and possibly even wild turkey traffic in the area I set up a TrailTimer
EZ-Cam to watch a trail crossing.
 The
"Slew Hole" is what we call the area adjacent to a slew that catches and
holds water for part of the year, except for the times that it is too dry
due to lack of rain for a few months. The TrailTimer game camera will tell
us what is moving through the area.
In past years when the slew had water
it became a hangout for wild hogs. They like to lay in the mud and shallow
parts of the water. This year more water is in the slew than usual due
to earlier flooding of the river 300 yards away. So changes are good wild
hogs will move through the area on the trails.
However, our number one purpose is
to check on deer. This area is an narrow finger of woods that runs parallel
to the grain field along the edge of the river. The finger is two miles
long but only 60 to 150 yards wide -- and we are in the 60 yard part. In
the past I've taken a bunch of deer pictures here and I'm thinking chances
are good it will happen this year too.
Uphill from the camera I have a stand
already in place (from previous years), a NorthStarr Treestands ladder
stand. I can take pictures from this stand and if a wild hog happens by
then I might get lucky and give him an archery lesson.
