Season 2000: (Scouting)
Scouting for deer is what makes your deer season happen. The more you scout the better your season is. Watch Your Step!!
The reason I walked by the rattler without seeing it -- and the reason Greg did -- is that he is a veteran rattlesnake catcher. He has a lot more practice spotting them than I do. (Although had my share of encounters when I was growing up in Florida as well as several in Texas.) Anyway, here's a pic of our bad boy. This is 3 footer, which is the most common size you see. That's it's rattles on the right and the head end has crawled under some stuff on the ground. Greg got his snake catching rig from his truck and we went after the snake. When we approached it the rattler coiled up and rattled, and lifted it's head out of the grass so it could strike.
Right here you can see it rising from it's hiding place in the weeds and grass. And here it is in: (640x480) or (800x600) Greg snattched up the snake with his snake catcher. Nothin' to it for a big dog like my bud Greg. ![]()
Here's a closeup of the rattler and the pincher end of Greg's rattlesnake catcher. (640x480) or (800x600) Every Spring Greg catches
dozens of rattlesnakes (live) and sells them to the snake buyers that come
to our area. A few years ago he invited me to go with him. I said
no, but wound up going anyway. I figured I'd just go sit in the truck if
I didn't like it. We got 3 rattlesnakes that day and I got a big surprise.
When the snakes showed up it was as exciting and all get out. Next Spring
maybe Greg will let us go along with him.

Ever get the feeling you're being watched? While
I was looking around for deer and sign over the weekend I got that
feeling, big time. I slowly checked around me and saw a familiar figure
about 15 yards away, watching my every move. I promptly snapped this picture.
And the neatest little adventure unfolded...
