For
several years the archery industry has been intrigued by vibration damping
devices of various design. In fact during recent years, "vibration damping"
may be the most used phrase by archery enthusiasts of all types.
Realizing the popularity and importance of reducing noise and vibration
in compound bows, bows that are growing shorter and faster by the day,
bow manufacturers are now studying vibration damping. Their attempts have
met with varying degrees of success, from gimmicks with no measurable effect
to design overhauls that one must shoot to fully appreciate. The most recent
and innovative development comes from Ben Pearson Archery.
The
new VIB~X System from Ben Pearson Archery has been proven to remarkably
dampen noise and vibration. (Pictured with the new Pearson Stomper Stabilizer.
Designed exclusively for VIB~X Bows by Vibracheck using VibaSORB technology..)
Founded in 1938, Pearson's latest catalog states, "It's understandable
that it would take one of the oldest companies in the business to take
noise and vibration reduction to its most effective level ever." There
is nothing old however, about Pearson's new system, aptly named "VIB-X".
The VIB-X System consists of a soft elastomer insert, made of exclusive
VibaSORB material from Vibracheck in Pensacola, Florida. The insert is
positioned in the bow riser where the stabilizer
mounts. A dowel in the center of the insert allows an archer to attach
stabilizers or other accessories to both the front and back of the bow
riser.
At the explosion of your shot, vibration and resonance traveling through
the machined aluminum riser encounter the soft VibaSORB insert. The material
effectively dampens much of the vibration on contact by disrupting its
natural frequency, much as you would disrupt the frequency of an oscillating
guitar string by touching it. The VIB-X System further dampens vibration
and recoil when the added weight of accessories causes the dowel rod in
the center of the VibaSORB insert to move against the elastomeric material.
The VibaSORB softly, but quickly arrests this movement thereby damping
any remaining vibration and recoil.
The result is a very innovative system that accomplishes what
it claims. It reduces noise and vibration levels by a margin that is more
than just "measurable" with sensitive machinery - you can actually hear
and feel a difference when comparing bows with the VIB-X System to those
without. This makes Pearson bows much more pleasurable to shoot. Trophy
bowhunters like Connecticut's Del DelMastro have proven Ben Pearson designs
in the field.

The new Pearson Stomper
Stabilizer was designed especially to assist with damping any stray noise
and vibration on bows like the Diamondback VX. |
Pearson established several alliances while researching and developing
the VIB-X System that will help it remain on the technological forefront
of reducing vibration in bows. The company's relation- ship with the University
of Alabama's Mechanical Engineering Dept. proved instrumental in the develop-
ment of VIB-X due in part to its extensive vibration testing equipment.
Pearson also sought the help of Vibracheck (R&R Enterprises) due to
that company's experience in effectively reducing noise and vibration with
it's brand of bow stabilizers made using the
company's exclusive VibaSORB material.
When asked about Vibracheck's role in the VIB~X project, Ron Gilley,
President of Vibracheck replied, "It's as slick an idea as I've seen to
reduce vibration right there in the bow without adding some sort of an
attachment. It's one of those classic innovations that makes me say 'Why
didn't I think of that?' The design crew at Pearson is really on the cutting
edge with this one. We're thankful for the opportunity to supply Pearson
with VIB-X inserts made from our material. VibaSORB is perfect for this
because we can get it very soft and that enhances vibration damping properties
while still maintaining the integrity of the material, and guaranteeing
the durability and longevity of the part."
Roger Templeton is Ben Pearson's R&D specialist. Ben Pearson Archery
has taken the lead in eliminating vibration from bows with its innovative
new VIB-X System. The bar has been raised and competitors will have to
rise to meet this challenge.
