BOWHUNTING
WITH ZANO 2003
An Online Bowhunt
Zan
Christensen and I are bowhunting deer at Rancho Zano on the outskirts of
the suburbs of San Antonio.
Day
#2 - January 3
The "El Toro
Buck"
Morning - Zano dropped
me off at the Finger stand, located on the top side of a bowl where the
Finger Ridge joins the main ridge. Soon a deer snorted me. A big, jucy
one -- the worst kind. A strip of light showed on the horizon. Another
bell ringer snort. Yikes!
Daylight came. Another snort.
If I could have found it I would have went to Zan's truck. This location
always has lots of deer traffic. But, not today.
At 9:48 two deer -- at last
-- walked up out of the draw and came by me within shooting range. A button
buck and a doe. (Their picture is above.) Zan came and got me at 10:00am.
At Zan's house I went to
Academy and bought some Scent Killer clothing soap and wassed all my clothers.
Zano:
I returned to the Rut Ravine stand, hoping for another opportunity
like I had yesterday morning. Within 10 minutes of settling in my
stand, a young doe walked by right under me. It wasn't even grey
light yet, and things were happening. At grey light a young buck
walked thru within 10yds, a 1.5 yr old spike with 6" tines. It was
his lucky day. An hour later a large bodied deer made its way up
the draw on the opposite side 40 yds away. Aye Caramba, what a deer!
But wait, something's not normal, this big guy is a giant spike!
He only has main beams, but no points. His beams are thick, and sweep
out forward, at least 18", maybe even 20", and bright yellow at that.
He looks just like a spanish bull ... very handsom. Although I tried
4 different calls to lure him in for a shot, he only looked and kept on
his original track. Oh well, there's still two weeks left for me
to find him again. An hour and a half later, it was time to go pick
up Robert.
