BOWHUNTING WITH
ZANO - An Online Bowhunt
Zan
Christensen and I are bowhunting deer at Rancho Zano on the outskirts of
the suburbs of San Antonio.
Afternoon Hunt: Back at Meadowgrove at 2:35. An hour later
a coyote walked out of the brush to my right, some 60 plus yards away.
This was a big sucker too, larger than the ones we have in our area, and
reddish in color instead of the tan I'm used to seeing. He slowly walked
around at the end of the woods for over half an hour, before returning
the way he came. At 4:30 he came rushing out of the woods and camped out
in the area he had been earlier. Then I saw his nose go up, he was smelling
something. Me? Well, I guess not, he started walking in my direction but
he hung up 35 yards out. Deer thirty came and he was still there. I had
to do something about this quick. So I stood up and even though he was
further than I like to shoot I drew to shoot at him. But he saw the motion
and darted into the brush. Then he stopped and looked at me and I waved
my arm. That did it, he trotted away.
The first deer was a young 8-point with a nice first year rack. A doe
came out behind him but they weren't together. This afternoon I was out
of the picture taking mode and, bow in hand, the two deer walked by me
on the left. Two does came out across from where the coyote had been and
when they crossed the grassy area they picked up it's scent and retreated.
Next was a big 8-pt, it was as far away as I could see, on the edge of
the woods to my right. He hit the coyotes trail and left in a hurry. I
waited until dark, the Stob double wide buck did not show. To
the Morning Hunt.
