BOWHUNTING WITH
ZANO - An Online Bowhunt
Zan
Christensen and I are bowhunting deer at Rancho Zano on the outskirts of
the suburbs of San Antonio.
Day
#3: Morning Hunt - I returned to Meadowgrove.
This is an area in the woods with a long but narrow grassy strip. The edge
of the woods has numerous active scrapes. The first deer I saw was a doe.
It came from across the grassy strip and to the right as far as I could
see. It walked along the edge of the trees and passed my stand. Picture
of the doe.
The doe took a left and stopped, alert, looking at something in the
woods. Doe on alert. The doe
then took a few steps down the trail that is 9 yards from my tree and up
went her flag and she trotted off. I could already see the problem in the
trees to my left. This particular problem had antlers ... a nice buck and
it was headed in my direction.
The 8-pt buck walked along the
edge of the trees. Based on the antlers Zan showed me from sheds
of bucks in this area this was a 3 1/2 year old. He is thin and had some
sort of injury in front of his rear leg and new hair is growing over it.
The buck obliged me by taking a few steps closer and stopping. Close-up
of the buck. Camera candy, for sure. You can see the size of the
injury on it's side. He has some gouges too. But he is fine.
This buck had just given me the perfect 15-20 yard shooting opportunity.
He moved further along the edge and stopped and worked a scrape. Two does
appeared on the opposite side of the grassy strip and the buck headed right
for them. They ran away. He returned and repeated the doe scenario three
more times. Finally he walked into the woods. Later a
young buck worked the scrape and moved on.
Zan hunted Cross Creek and a 2 1/2 year 8-pt with a 14" spread fed through
15 minutes after good light. At one time he was 13 yards from Zan. At 9:00
3 does walked through the area 45 yards out. And at 9:15 a lone doe came
up from behind and scented him.
We will be back this afternoon. I'm returning to meadowgrove, I really
want to get a daylight look at the "Stob" buck I saw last night. To
The Afternoon Hunt.
