| DAY 5 - George's Turkey Curse Is Expunged
and Things Mess Up for the Chef
George Tague- End Of The
"Turkey Curse"
George hunted #11 in a Double
Bull Martix blind at a crossroad of a power line and an access road. He
got in there before daylight and heard wild hogs in the dark. They were
gone before daylight.
And in George's own words...
"Nothing was going on for
the next 2 1/2 hours and the 'Donald Duck's Hunting Method' was put to
the task. (It involves alternately opening and closing your eyes in a highly
relaxed state.)"
"At 9:45 during an eye opening
session, a group of 10-12 wild turkeys appeared right in front of the blind.
Moments later, 35 years of chasing wild turkeys ended, With A Bow and Arrow!"
Here is George Tague with
his first Tom turkey, a 19 pounder longbeard.
Back at camp there
were reports of deer movement, more wild turkeys, and wild hogs. Before
Rick Philippi left for home he told me that both he and Colby had seen
a huge buck at #21 and I should start hunting it.
MIke Ditchler had the only
shots. But they were all misses. So we went out in the camp yard and shot
the Cube target. Mike's arrows were not grouping. He made adjustments but
nothing helped. Something was bad wrong.
We needed the help of a pro.
So I drove the Chef to Belton,
Texas to see Roger Peacock at Peacock Archery. Roger carefully inspected
Mike's bow. Several things were wrong. Mike had added some sound dampening
knobs to the limbs and the limb bolts were barely long enough to hold the
limbs on and the top limb was at a slight angle. The arrow rest was cracked
and moved when the bow was drawn. The bowsight was also cracked and the
pins were not locking in place. All caused by rough handling on Mike's
airline flight to Texas.
Roger put the bow in his
bow press and went to work. He put in longer limb bolts and put the limbs
on straight. He replaced the bow string with a black and white Tailor Maid
Bowstring and added a Fine-Line peep sight and string loop. Mike picked
out a Vital Bow Gear bowsight and a NAP Quiktune 1000 arrow rest to replace
his damaged ones. He also bought a dozen new carbon arrows.
Roger made the final adjustments
and he and Mike went to the range and Mike started shooting. Mike shot
tight groups from the get go and Roger made careful adjustments to the
bow sight until Mike's group moved to the bulls eye.
When we returned to camp
it was after dark.
