Wayne's
Day - A Buck A Day Keeps Billy Don Happy
Wayne
Dobson: Wayne hunted View Point and was "covered up with bucks."
At day light one buck and 3 does were in the area. By 8:15 he had seen
11 deer, 5 were bucks. The second buck he saw was an 8-point. Wayne tried
to draw but "couldn't get 'er done." He let down and didn't get busted.
Five minutes later a larger
buck came in. Wayne tried to draw again and couldn't get the bow to break
over. He let down and sat quietly in the treestand and watched the deer.
Then an another even bigger buck came up and, again, Wayne could not get
his bow back. He let down and prayed. Suddenly he realized he was enjoying
himself, his heart was pounding, he was having a great time, and in the
big picture whether or not he got this buck wasn't a big deal.
Wayne felt better and said
one more prayer. He adjusted his sight to 30 yards and pulled his
bow back, no problem. The buck was quartering away at 30 yards. Wayne put
his pin on the right side and shot.
The buck trotted up the hill
to the right of the stand. It stooped in 50 yards and laid down.
One of the other big bucks ran with him and stood by him. Thirty seconds
later Wayne's buck got up and disappeared into the cedars a few yards away.
The other buck walked back down the hill toward Wayne.
Wayne felt really relaxed,
he was not sure that the hit looked right, he could not see his arrow but
felt certain it had been a pass through. He was elated. He took out his
cell phone and called Billy Don, his wife and his neighbor. Billy Don told
him to wait until he got there.
He packed up his gear and
waited in the tree for half an hour. Then he climbed down and found his
arrow. It was covered in blood. But he could find no sign of blood. Wayne
sat down and waited. Another young 8-point came into the area wan walked
within 25 yards from Wayne. The buck was still there when he saw Billy
Don's truck coming down the hill.
I stayed in camp this morning
to take pictures of the Duck and his buck. At 8:25 Billy Don answered his
cell phone. When he hung up he said, "Wayne shot his monster buck. Lets
go." We jumped into the truck and drove to Wayne. A young buck ran off
when we got close.
Wayne told me, "The fact
that the other deer were not spooked was attributable to having my bow
set up quietly. I use moleskin and Mini Limb Savers on my rest and bowsight
plus the Limbsaver's for the bowstring, and the original limb savers. My
bow is a Matthews with harmonic dampeners and that helps also."

11 point buck.
