Wells
Creek Outfitters is a smooth running bowhunting operation.
We stayed in a modern lodge.
The accommodations were very comfortable. Meals were prepared by Marie
Glasgow and they are, conservatively, in my opinion, simply the best on
the planet. Every single meal was a 10. Everyone at Wells Creek Outfitters
was friendly and helpful.
Our guides were Bob McNeff,
Brad Hickman and Rob McNeff, the owner. The guides knew the area thoroughly
as well as where all the stand sites were. (For instance, JimboTX is
a lefty and they knew just which stands would work for him.)
The treestands are top notch
and he has over 125 of them already up and ready for you to hunt. He has
portables, ladder stands, and climbing sticks. The stands sat comfortable,
were quiet, and the sticks and ladders made climbing easy and quiet.
Wells Creek has over 10,000
acres of woods and farm crop land. The counties hunted are the adjacent
counties of Brown., Adams, Schulyer, Fulton and Hancock. In spite of this
large area Rob keeps the deer harvest small. He limits the hunting to 36
five day hunts.
This area has big, record
book class, Illinois bucks. Every year several bucks from Wells Creek Whitetails
qualify for the record books. The highest score for one of Rob's bowhunters
to date was Bill Goodwin's 1998 buck that scored 210.
So far this year (Dec 1,
1999) 28 hunters have taken 15 bucks and 9 does. Eleven of these bucks
raw scored above the P&Y minimum. They were: 166, 160, 156, 151, 141,
137, 133, 131, 130, 127, and 126.

Rob McNeff knows his
deer and his area; and most importantly he knows what bowhunters require. |
I asked Rob McNeff he got
started and he said, “I wanted to do something that involved the outdoors
and archery. Brown County is in the middle of the Golden Triangle area
and deer hunters want to hunt there. I had a lot of deer and land there
so I decided to do it.”
He began bowhunting when
he was 16 and he loves it. He genuinely enjoys it when his hunters get
a deer, too.
Rob McNeff just wants to
give other bowhunters a chance to take a big buck. You can reach him at
217-894-680 and see the web site at www.wellscreekoutfitters.com.
