The Digital Log Of A Bowhunt At Wells Creek Outfitters in 1999 - by Robert Hoague

Bowhunting Wells Creek Outfitters . . .

To the hunts on Nov 26 - Dec 1

Monday, 1st day of the bowhunt:
The Duck and JimboTX bowhunted. Don saw 2 does and a fawn. JimboTX sat a stand overlooking a bean field and saw a 3 does and a small buck. They were all close. Brad saw 4 does in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. I had a respiratory infection and was sick as a dog and didn't compute or hunt.

Tuesday, 2nd day of the bowhunt:
(Morning hunt) The Duck watched a large buck chasing a doe in the early light. Things were lookin' good, then it started pouring rain. JimboTX got soaked and called it quits. Brad saw 3 does.
(Afternoon hunt)
JimboTX saw a young 10 point and 6 does come by on trails. The Duck saw 3 does and 1 large flock of wild turkeys. Brad had a bomber 10-point approaching. This was a huge buck and Brad definitely intended to shoot if he got close enough, it was still 40 yards off. The wind was swirling. Suddenly the buck stopped, sniffed several times and walked off.
Bill Goodwin of North Star Treestands arrived at dinner time and will hunt with us the rest of the week. Bill's son J.R. will be arrive tomorrow morning.

Wednesday, 3rd day of the bowhunt:
(Morning) The Duck hunted a scrape line and saw a doe check all the scrapes within sight. A 10-point buck rubbed trees in the area but didn't get close enough for a shot. JimboTX saw 4 does and a young 6-point right underneath his stand. Brad had 2 button bucks in his area. J.R. saw a doe and a fawn. Bill Goodwin saw 8 does this morning and 7 more does during the evening hunt. He says, "tomorrow is my buck day." Bill knows what a buck day is too, cause that is his buck from '98 in the picture up above.
(Afternoon) As JimboTX sat in his stand he heard a "crash" of horns and two bucks went at it hot and heavy. He could just see them through the brush. The whole forest came alive as deer ran back and forth, to and from the area. They stopped several times and resumed. The Duck zipped. Brad saw 2 does move by him headed toward a corn field. (The fields have been harvested but there are corn ears and stubble a plenty.) Joe saw a 6-point and 4 does. J.R. saw a young 8-point, looking around for does, and 3 raccoons.

Thursday, Thanksgiving day, the 4nd day of the bowhunt:
(Afternoon hunt) Bill Goodwin saw 5 baldies. On the way to his stand Superguide (Brad) saw a 150 class buck with 6 does. JimboTX saw 15 does and a spike. On the stand a young 8-point and a doe with 2 fawns. The Duck bleated in a big doe but decided not to shoot. Mark had 6 does come underneath him. He can see a bean field and several deer were in it. Joe, J.R. and I zipped.
(Thanksgiving Dinner) We all had a great thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and deserts.
(Morning hunt) Bill Goodwin saw 25 deer in all, mostly unidentified ones in the distance. At 7:30 6 does were on the ridge, uphill from Bill's stand on a river bank. A monster buck charged the group and took off after one of the does. Later on he had a group of does within range and drew but an unseen doe spotted the movement and spooked the lot. Bill has a stand on the ridge also and will move there this afternoon. Joe saw the same 6-point he saw yesterday. (Superguide) Brad saw 8 does and fawns. The Duck didn't see any deer. J.R. watched 2 wild turkey hens walk down a trail 30 yards from him, then a spike came up and followed the turkeys uphill. Mark saw 17 deer, 5 bucks were in hot pursuit chasing 1 doe, two were 8's but they were moving and didn't stop.
