DAY #6, Venado
Loco Deerhunt
Our groups total deer sightings today:
74 Deer, 25 were bucks.
Seting Up At 24.
As the morning light improved I a wide buck through the mesh window
of my Duble Bull blind. He turned out to be an 8-point and not a harvestable
buck on this hunt.
Later a yearling buck came downhill and walked by. This is the one
with very short tines.
Nine does and the short spike buck later I drove to #23 and picked
up the Duck. We took down the Double Bull blind that the Duck was using.
I wanted to set it up inside my sagebrush blind at #24.
We drove to 24 and set up my new home in the sage.
Afternoon Hunt
I was inside the blind at #24 by 4:00. The Duck was back at #15. A
herd of sheep browsed across the hilltop. Once they came down by me and
spread out to browse. Now, I've had experience with sheep in Wyoming antelope
hunts and when they come to park in your area you are through, the game
moves out, I slipped out of the blind and chased the sheep away. They went
uphill and over the ridge.
Meanwhile the Duck watched a scrawny doe with a spotted fawn grazing
nearby. Another doe walked up and the scrawny doe charged it. The new doe
circled and in doing so cruised right by the Duck's shooting window. The
Duck was at full draw and ready. A well placed arrow put the doe down in
50 yards. He drug the doe to the road and field dressed it.
No deer moved, I saw zip. The 4-wheeler was parked 300 yards away behind
my blind. As I walked to it I passed at least 200 sheep in my little valley.
When I drove up the Duck had the doe all ready for picture takin'.
