DAY #4, Venado
Loco Deerhunt
Our groups total deer sightings today:
52 Deer, 19 were bucks.
Deer Fight
6:00 AM and my watch alarm is ringing. I can barely hear it for the
sound of rain pouring on the tin roof of our cabin. We all eat breakfast
cereal, hoping the storm will stop. It does and we get ready to leave.
Paul Abat suggests I take one of the ranch trucks, just in case. It was
a good idea because "just in case" was coming on fast.
I dropped the Duck off at #23. He disappeared into the darkness and
I drove to #24. I parked, put on my backpack, picked up my bow and started
toward the rocky drop off that led to my blind. The sky broke open and
it poured. I hopped back into the ranch truck. Lightning crackled all around.
More black clouds rolled into the area. I knew Don would be ok and stay
dry in the Double Bull blind so I waited to see what the weather would
do.
Forty-five minutes later the dark clouds blew over. Ten minutes later
I was in my sagebrush blind. One doe showed up mid morning. At 10:00 I
got to work, I wanted to set up a new blind in the sage where I overlooked
the area I saw the 10 point and other buck in yesterday.
In short order I had an opening cut in the sage and a couple of shooting
lanes fixed up. I picked up the Duck and we went to camp.
Afternoon Hunt
Some days you see magic stuff when you're hunting. This afternoon was
going to be one of those days.
Sunlight glanced off something moving in the brush about 100 yards away.
A doe was walking toward me. I picked up my camera, turned it on and telephotoed
in, the doe was a lot closer.
Another doe walked down hill from the direction where I took the bucks
twilight picture on day #2.
A couple more walked into the immediate area and checked all around.
A third doe appeared in the nearby brush and approached the two does.
One of them laid her ears back and kicked at the intruder. They both went
to their hind feet and socked the heck out of each other with their front
feet. I snatched up my camera, turned it on, pointed it at the fighters
and held the button down as the camera booted up its CD. Too late, the
fight was over. Woopos, one of the does went back up. I pushed the button
-- putting the hammer down on a rare and wonderful sight in nature that
we hunters get to witness. Here it is, that magic moment, for you to enjoy
in 800x600 or 640x480.
Suddenly 3 deer came running full speed, they raced through my area
and in an instant there were no deer to be seen. Half an hour later I saw
two does way uphill, walking back and forth and looking at something in
the cactus. I glassed the area and saw a group of javelinas. They were
what was making the deer nervous. Daylight was fading anyway, so I slipped
out of my blind and managed to catch up with the javelina's walking along
this fence. There were a dozen in all.
