DAY #3, Venado
Loco Deerhunt
Our groups total deer sightings today:
71 Deer, 40 were bucks.
The Broken Tine
Buck And The Redneck Grip
Daylight came at #15. It was overcast and foggy and in the misty, faded
morning light I saw a buck. I counted 9 points, took the bucks picture,
put the camera down and picked up my bow. The handle grip was missing!
The buck moved straight away and disappeared up hill. Here is a better
look at him in 800x600 or 640x480.
Then a young looking 8-point walked out of the brush and down one of
the trails trail I am hunting.
The first doe of the day showed up when it got good light.
A 1 1/2 year old buck was soon on the scene. The light was still a
little funky from the fog.
As the young buck nibbled on whatever it was he was eating I noticed
another deer behind him. Another buck! But that was all I got to see of
him. He moved back into the brush.
A short while later I spied another buck. He had short tines and when
I glassed them I noticed one tine was broken.
This picture blurred out a little but you can see the buck's broken
tine.
I decided to take the doe on the right (the other deer is a runt of
a 1 1/2 old buck.) The doe was perfectly broadside at 12-15 yards. I aimed
for the vitals, held on target, and shot way low. The deer ran away.
I drove to camp and Gene Cowan (geneinnc) said he had some some adhesive
wrapping that had a texture and would make a good covering for a grip,
if we could make one. The Duck and I used duct tape to construct a new
grip for the bow's handle.
Gene
kidded me about having the perfect "redneck bow handle" and he took a picture
while I was wrapping it. He emailed the picture to me.
Once we got the grip to look like the one on Gene's bow it felt pretty
good so I shot it. It shot ok but was slippery to hold. Gene wrapped the
duck tape wonder with his adhesive tape. That worked fine. I resighted
my bow and was good to go.
Afternoon Bowhunt:
For the afternoon bowhunt I went to #24. It was overcast and dreary.
I was surprised by a doe that walked close to my blind. It stopped and
stared at me. And then continued on it's way. Two hours before dark I saw
a bomber buck in the brush. It walked by on a trail 30 yards away, a little
further than I like to shoot. I had accidentally left my binoculars but
I could easily see 10 long, fat points on the large buck's light color,
heavy rack. His legs looked short for his big body. This time I didn't
even try to take a picture, if this buck got in range I didn't want to
be holding my camera instead of my bow.
Later, at dusk, another buck came into view, it's antlers were chocolate
colored and he was also a 10, but he was moving too carefully and slowly,
by the time he was in the clear (15 yards away, broadside) I could not
see my pins clearly. When the buck was gone I went to the 4-wheeler and
picked up the Duck.
