AFTERNOON: Hogs
Everywhere We Go ...
Rick and I were back in
Merle's hog woods at 2:30 and went to the nearest pond. A few hogs were
walking along the far edge of the water and I stalked toward them. But
they winded me and took off.
On the way to check some
blow downs Rick stopped, nodded his head and pointed at the area in the
picture below. Can you find the hog?
As you see in these two
pics, hogs don't require much cover to hide themselves when they bed down.
Wild hogs sleep very soundly too, which is about their only weakness. Well,
this sleeping beauty was another young hog and we slipped quietly away
and let it get some much needed beauty sleep.
In the east meets west fence
corner we glassed a hog laying in mud, right in the corner of the fence.
By putting some trees between me and them, I began working my way toward
the corner.
A fat tree near them kept
me hidden and I made good time getting closer.
When I reached the fat tree
I realized that 3 hogs were in the corner! They were all laying on one
another like a stack of ham pancakes.
I signaled Rick and he took
a pic of the three hog pancake.
These three wild porkers
were not what I was looking for either. I already had a tender BBQ pig
and wanted a more mature wild boar this time. So, once again, we quietly
slipped away without disturbing the sleeping hogs.
Figuring out where to go
next was not a problem, we struck a direct course for the closest blow
downs, which were just inside the woods' edge. We saw a group of hogs right
away.
