Hog Bowhunt and on the spot pictures -- by Robert Hoague
OUTFITTER: Texas-S Bowhunting Ranch | Interview with Merle Smith of Texas-S Bowhunting Ranch | Web site of Texas S Bowhunting Ranch and email hunt@texas-Sbowhunting.com PAST HUNTS at Texas-S Bowhunting Ranch: Hunts in 1999, in 2000 and in 2001 & 2004. 2006 Bowhunt For Wild Hogs @ Texas "S" July 6 - Day #2, Part #1 MORNING HUNT:
At 8:30 we saw distant movement in the trees. That movement turned into a group of 20+ wild hogs. Things looked promising as they came closer. But they missed us by 50 yards as they went by on the west side of the stand. Then they re-appeared 90 yards away at a mud hole near the edge of the opening. They stayed there a while and then wandered off to the west. Without warning, twenty minutes later a different group of hogs appeared at the mud hole. When they left they entered the open area and went out of sight to the north. I wanted to watch for hog movement a little longer so Rick got down with the intention of checking the brush piles and blowdowns to the east. Rick had been gone only 15 minutes when I saw another group of hogs walking toward the stand. They passed me on the east side just out of comfortable bow range. Fifteen more minutes passed and the same hogs came charging out of the trees to the east and ran through the middle of the open area. "Rick, did you just shoot?"
I asked into the walkie talkie. "Yes," he answered. "I'll be right there,"
I said. When I got to him he was on the walkie talkie telling Merle where
we were.
Bingo!
A few more carefully placed steps and Rick was where he wanted to be. He drew and shot. The arrow placement looked perfect and the tan hog jumped up and ran to the west. The other hogs followed it. We found blood. I followed
it and Rick walked ahead. It was a short walk, "Here it is." Rick announced.
