July 5 - Day #1, Part #2

MORNING HUNT: Continued
In the direction Rick was pointing, I saw hogs across the nearby open field. Luckily they were busy rooting something and Rick began a stalk through the wide open.

The hogs were oblivious to him as the crossed to the opposite side of the clearing. They were progressing slowly along the west fence and inching closer to the woods as Rick inched closer to the same woods ... and them.

Rick slipped into the edge of the woods. By now the hogs were also in the woods. Rick moved into bow range and I saw him draw and aim. But the shot missed.

As the small group of hogs trotted away we walked toward the middle of the property. When we reached a familiar area that had large boulders we saw a pack of hogs. But they were walking in the opposite direction from us.

We improvised.

Walking briskly, I gave the hogs a wide birth until I came to some familiar hog trails that I knew led to a sizable pond. I followed a trail and came out at the pond. Hogs were already there and I stepped into a ditch and moved closer. When I was directly across from them I took their pic.

And then took a few more steps and took another pic.

Ok, so much for the pics. I wanted to make the hogs go toward Rick, who was in a makeshift ground blind at least 250 yards away. If possible, I wanted them to walk, not run. So I slowly stood up and let them see me. I was careful not to make any aggressive moves.

The hogs walked back from the water's edge and joined another group of hogs farther back in the woods. I stayed put, not wanting to pressure them.

Great ...  I got lucky. The hogs began walking in Rick's direction and I followed them at a slow pace. In time the hogs were passing through the area where I had left Rick.

I heard Rick shoot. And all the hogs ran toward the area with the boulders.

Merle Smith, the owner of Texas-S, had given us each a walkie talkie and we radioed him. Merle asked where we were and said he was on his way. Rick's arrow was sticking in the ground and I looked it over. It was bloody end to end. (We left the arrow right where it was, just in case we needed it for reference later on.)

Merle Smith drove up on his 4 Wheeler.

Rick told Merle how the hunt had come down and we took up the track.

The hog was laying in a shallow ditch 60 yards ahead of us.

The three of us pulled the boar out of the ditch and set it up for pictures.

Sooooo, I put the camera in VIDEO mode and here is Rick's Video Clip.

The time was 12:26. Things were happening fast today. We loaded the boar on Merle's 4 wheeler and returned to camp to give the hogs, and us, a break. Rick and I drove into Clarksville and ate a the Italian Bistro on the town square. We both had the daily special and it was outstanding.

After lunch we returned to Texas-S and got ready for the afternoon hunt. Now it was my turn to hunt and Rick's to take pictures. (Continued...)
