July 5 - Day #1
MORNING HUNT: Our
plan is to stalk the wild hog so we waited an hour and a half after daylight
before we took to the woods. We wanted to give the hogs time to find a
place to bed down.
That's Rick Philippi above
and we are starting our hunt. This area has been very dry this year and
and the ground cover is almost gone. When we have been here before in the
spring and summer there was plenty of ground level greenery. But not this
year, Merle Smith (the owner) told us they are 17-inches behind on rainfall.
A mere two hundred yards
into the woods and only 10 minutes into the hunt we saw a group of wild
hogs rooting around up ahead of us. Rick used the trees to block his view
and slowly moved closer to them.
I eased along behind Rick
and took a few pictures.
When Rick was almost in
bow range one of the hogs saw us and they walked away.
We turned to the East where
some brush piles are, we have found hogs bedded down in them on previous
hunts at Texas-S. We were not disappointed and saw a hog sleeping in the
leaves by a tree. Contrary to what you would think, wild hogs sleep very
deep and stalking them is definitely possible. The hog (bottom left in
the pic below) was sound asleep and Rick slipped into bow range from the
hogs rear side.
Unexpectedly, when Rick drew
his bow, a smaller hog stood up in another brush pile and darted behind
a tree.
Both hogs trotted away and
Rick, still at full draw, looked back at me and and said, "That was a close
one!"
We changed directions and
went to another proven area, the largest pond on the property. We checked
the edges of the water for wild hogs from a high spot. Nothing was happening
here right now so we walked across the dam.
On the far end of the water
Rick pointed toward a group of pine trees.
Another group of hogs was
in the stand of pine trees. They walked along in the shade of the trees
and we followed.
They kept walking and we
followed for 10 minutes and the terrain opened up. Then Rick saw a situation
he liked better .
On the other side of the
nearby scrub oak trees Rick saw a wild boar ... that was by himself.
So pursued that situation.
The boar did not see us but he was on the move and we couldn't close the
distance. Then Rick saw more hogs.
COMMENTS: This gets
us started with the hog hunt updates. At this point in the hunt the time
is 10:49 and we have already been into wild hogs several times. I have
more pictures to work up and upload and then there is a lot of hunt left
today for both Rick and I. (Continued...)
