Day 3
(Morning Hunt)
We used the Top Drive truck blind and drove to the far end of the oat field
we have been hunting. Daylight came ... followed by the rain ... followed
by the wind ... followed by a sharp drop in temperature. Jim and I braved
the weather, but the deer were smarter than us, they stayed "at the house."
We returned to camp and warmed up.
(Afternoon Hunt)
Eventually the rain slacked and Chad took us back to our original blind
in the corner of the oat field. The weather was overcast and "see your
breath" cold. As the afternoon passed we saw a mixture of deer
and wild hogs.
A big 8 point walks along the edge of the
woods.
Later in the evening wild hogs came out
of the brush into the field. Here, Jim Autrey looks out of the blind as
wild hogs approach our blind.
Another group of hogs trot down the muddy
road to our blind.
A doe and buck walked out of the brush
into our edge of the field. It was the fat necked 10 point and he is with
a doe in rut. The doe browsed on the oats. Everywhere she went he walked
along with her.
During
the time the "Fatneck" buck and his doe were around, a handful of bucks
showed up. This is a young 1 1/2 (yearling) buck and he is sporting a pretty
nice rack for his first one. (The genes down here are excellent.)
None of the bucks wanted to tangle with
"Fatneck." It's for good reason. Jim and I saw a buck fight on our first
hunt. When we reviewed our video footage of the fight it we recognized
Fatneck. He gave his opponent a thrashing. He is the oldest buck we have
seen here. He is quite a trophy.
Here are two pictures of Fatneck. One from
the front and the other looking away. This is what an old buck looks like.
Notice his thick neck, fat face, squint eyed, long body and tubby belly.
A buck this age looks short legged.
Fatneck was in range for my camera several
times (obviously). But he never quite got in bow range.
So far we have seen him every afternoon.
Tomorrow I am putting a Double Bull blind right in the middle of his action
and I'll see if I can get him to do the bow and arrow boogie. Wish me luck.
To Day #4 ...
