BOWHUNT: Antelope In Wyoming
Sept 14, 2000 - Day
#7 (Continued from Day 7)
I looked at the buck as it
appeared in my shooting window. It barely had an inch of horn above its
skinny prong and the neck was thin. He was pretty young, probably a year
and a half.
I looked at Andy and shook my
head no. We watched him drink.
The young buck drank for
quite a while and finally trotted off. Ande and I ate our sack lunches.
After lunch we glassed another
buck on the far hill in front of us. The buck came right in and started
gulping down water. This buck was larger than the preceding one, heavier
through the neck and shoulders. Ande nodded his head. The buck faced us
as it drank and Ande sat patiently, his bow at the ready.
The buck turned broadside and
Ande smoothly and quietly came to full draw. I clicked a picture (unfortunately
it came out blurry) and then Ande released his arrow. The buck spun
and ran straight away. I clicked another picture, but the buck was already
down, only 40 yards from where it was hit.
We took up the blood trail.
Just kidding! We walked right over to the buck, it was never out of sight.
Ande had a perfect double lung hit with a Vortex and it put the buck down
pronto. We cleaned the blood from the antelope the best we could and took
some pics.
Ande Rushing, President of
the Texas Field Archery
Association, with his antelope taken on our 2000 bowhunt.
We loaded Ande's buck in
the back of his truck and he returned to the Hornbuckle Ranch headquarters
to get the buck ready for our trip back home.
It's 2:28pm, two thirds
of the day is gone, and I'm at bat ... and I just noticed a nice buck standing
at the top of the hill to my left. MORE...
