BOWHUNT
FOR THE FLORIDA OSCEOLA
 |
In Florida we are
hunting with David Mills of Zolfo Springs, Florida in Central Florida's
Osceola wild turkey country. David is an easy going, likable guy with a
good sense of humor.
David has thousands of acres
available to hunt Florida Osceolas. He understands this unique species
of wild turkey and knows their habitat.
David is now part of the
Woodhaven Sting Team and is hosting Mike Pentecost and several members
of the team on this hunt. To contact David about Osceola hunts, bow
or shotgun, phone 1-863-990-9087. David also guides Alligator hunts. |
Sam McCartney
Sam McCartney is from Centre
Hall, Pennsylvania and came with Jim Panaro. This morning he went to a
different spot than yesterday. The first gobbles he heard were at 7:00
-- there were 4 different gobblers. They flew down at 7:10 ... with hens.
The area was quiet for 45 minutes. Then a hen entered the field 100 yards
from the hunter's blind.
Sam called very aggressively
on a Woodhaven mouth call and a Cherry Crystal. The hen called back and
looked agitated. A second hen entered the field.
In minutes a gobbler strutted
out where he had seen the first hen. Sam continued calling and the hens
came toward them. The strutting gobbler followed her.
Up the field 300 yards Sam
saw a dozen jakes. They ran towards the strutting gobbler. When they got
to him they surrounded him and began flogging him with their wings and
jumping up and kicking at him. They ran the adult gobbler out of the field
into a nearby cypress head.
The hens stopped and watched
the fight and chase. Sam kept calling and watched the gobbler as it walked
through the trees and circled toward the blind. The gobbler stepped back
into the field and stopped 25 yards away. Sam clucked to get the gobbler's
head to come up and shot him with his shotgun.
Sam went to his first Osceola
gobbler, picked a couple of oranges and got his picture taken with the
bird.
Sam works for a construction
company in central Pennsylvania. He has turkey hunted for 20 years. He
said, "I'm addicted to it. I've hunted in Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, New York,
Maryland, as well as Pennsylvania. It doesn't matter where you hunt them
it is different."
