BOWHUNT
FOR THE FLORIDA OSCEOLA
Robert Hoague
- The Hush Mouth Gobbler
David Mills and Sean Keleher
took us to a new area for the afternoon hunt. We set up two Matrix blinds
in a field, 85 yards from a fence with tall trees on the other side. David
did the calling. He used my Woodhaven aluminum slate and made it sound
sweet. At 7:02 I noticed a red head in the brush across the fence. As it
silently stepped up to the fence and looked at our decoys. I picked up
my camera. "There he is," I whispered to Fred -- we were in the same blind.
When I turned the camera on the gobbler ducked under the fence. Here he
is 80 yards away. David saw him and made a couple of soft yelps.
This pic shows the gobbler
and our decoys. He is about 75 yards away and getting closer.
The gobbler was good to
go. David stopped calling. The tom walked parallel to the fence line, keeping
his eye(s) on our taxidermy hen and jake decoys. He liked 'em a lot..
The Gobbler stopped, this
is where the whole deal can fall apart, as in "hung up."
Good ... he didn't hang.
He moved closer but stopped 35 yards to the side of the decoys. He kept
his head looking straight ahead but he is keeping track of the decoys
with his left eye -- but that's part of the turkey gobbler posturing thing
... make the other gobbler think you don't see him and then charge in and
peck his head off.
In half a minute he was
clearly decoy bound. I laid my Sony down and picked up my bow ... he went
into full strut. A big, nice fan that I would have loved to taken a picture
of. But it was BowTech time.
Briskly, the gobbler strutted
to the decoys. I was already at full draw and took my shot. I heard that
"feather impact" sound that an arrow makes when it hits a turkey. The gobbler
zipped over by the corner of our blind. I figured he would drop right there.
And I think he might have ... if I would have hit him !!! NEXT...
