Nice Day For A Grand Slam!
Hunt With JimboTX
Overnight,
the weather turned severe at my place. The temperature plummeted
and it began to snow. Except for a quick lunch Fred hunted all day and
did not see a single wild turkey.

While Fred hunted the next frosty morning I phoned my long time friend JimboTX to see if
he had been seeing turkeys at his ranch near Blanket, Texas. He said yes and invited us over. Fred and I
drove to JimboTX's place, Red Oak Ranch, later that afternoon. Our
arrival was too late to hunt but still early enough for JimboTX and Fred to
locate some gobblers roosting in a dense piece of woods. Fred quietly pooped up the blind and left.
Morning Hunt
Fred put the decoys out and got in the blind. A few minutes later,
still in the dark, Fred heard a loud gobble no less than 50 yards away.
It was still dark so Fred remained quiet. More gobbles sounded and Fred
recognized 8 different gobblers -- all within 200 yards.
When it was light enough to barely see the ground Fred knew they would
fly down soon. So he made his first calls with the Woodhaven aluminum
slate -- all very soft calls. When the gobbler closest to Fred flew
down it gobbled and went toward another gobbler that was further away.
The two Tom's gobbled until they joined up.
Fred did some louder yelps but the gobbles got fainter and fainter as the birds moved away.
At 9:00 Fred switched to aggressive calls with the Freddie Bear
Sports "Terminator" diaphragm call. He heard very distant answering
gobbles.
Fred kept
on calling aggressively and went to the Woodhaven aluminum slate.
The gobblers continually got closer. When they sounded 75 to 100
yards away Fred switched to light calls. In two minutes he heard
gobblers spitting and drumming out of sight to the left of the
blind Fred turned on the video camera.
It really surprised Fred, but the next thing he saw was 3 big
longbeards rushing into view and knocking the jake decoy over. The
trio surrounded the toppled decoy and pecked and spurred it. All 3
gobblers were big longbeards so Fred shot the closest one. It ran
directly toward the blind and collapsed 5 yards from the left corner of
the blind.
Instantly, one of the other longbeards ran to the downed bird and attached it.
The blind's mesh was down on the left corner and Fred peeked out
through the narrow slit and saw the gobbler violently pecking the dead
gobbler's head. Carefully Fred opened a wider shooting space in
the blind's window. To make the shot Fred had to shoot through the mesh
so he opened the blades on the Grim Reaper RazorCut until they locked in place (in the open position).
The gobbler was so close that Fred had to stand up inside the
blind to get a good shooting angle he needed. Fred drew and then
crouched and leaned to clear some branches outside of the blind. He
made certain he had the KingsWay Triad sight's front and back pins
lined up for the shot. And released.
The second longbeard collapsed on the spot. The two lay only a foot apart !!!
Fred called me on the cell phone. "I just got my Grand Slam," he said.
Fred Lutger had just completed his Grand Slam, every one a mature longbeard, all in the same
Spring of 2007, in only 24 intense, turkey hunting and travel days.

FRED LUTGER'S EQUIPMENT COMMENTS
"My second shot was very awkward, I had stood up in the blind and was leaning and crouching to make the shot. The Diamond
Black Ice was still very easy to draw and comfortable to shoot, even in the awkward position I was in."
""The second gobbler was my 6th longbeard this Spring and the Grim Reaper RazorCut
has performed outstandingly. Anyone who turkey hunts with a bow
should try this broadhead. When I had to shoot through the mesh on the
blind so I opened the Grim Reaper's blades before I shot. The Grinm
Reaper blades snap open and stay in position so it can be shot as
a fixed blade broadhead. I had no deflection from the mesh. This is a
plus for the Grim Reaper for blind hunters -- almost
all expandables will deflect when shot through mesh."
"Even with my awkward, off balance position of the second shot the high visibility of the back and front pins of the TRIAD Double Adjustable Pin bowsight from KingsWay Archery lined up perfectly for me and I made an accurate, killing shot."
"Using the Hazel Creek jake
and hen decoy by taxidermist Calley Morris as a pair has given us
incredible results. We place the two decoys facing each other 10 yards
from the blind. Both hens and gobblers immediately run to them when
they see this combination. For bowhunting, using these two decoys bring
the gobblers in for a close shot. They are gobbler magnet."
"And once again the realistic sounds of the Woodhaven Game Calls aluminum slate and Freddie Bear Sports "Terminator" call got the attention of gobblers and brought them from a long ways off right to the decoys."
