Bowhunt
With Rick Philippi
Day 01 Continued - The G
Most of the days in the turkey
woods are worth it for the sunrise alone. It danced in glowing red and
pink colors on the horizon between the dark trees and deep blue early morning
sky. I took a picture of it through the window of the Matrix blind.
First up was a lone hen
walking through the trees in front of us. Next 3 hens passed through. They
watched our decoys for a while and one checked them out. A double gobble
behind them hurried them up and they picked up their pace in the opposite
direction.
Two gobblers took
shape in the trees. They had spotted the hens.
Fred called and the gobblers
came closer but their main focus was on the soon to be disappearing hens.
It was still not the best
of daylight and my camera was taking pictures that were a little dark because
of the low light. I pumped up the light and took another pic of the two
gobblers.
They cleared the trees.
Once again, monster longbeards. Fred talked to them with the Woodhaven
slate and they delayed a bit but decided to go with the hens.
I got one last pic before
they disappeared into the trees, following the hens.
Rick and Cathy Philippi
had to go home and after they left Fred and I drove into Jacksboro and
ate at a BBQ place that had some very large racked buck mounts. Just looking
at all those points and thick antlers made me extra hungry and I had to
eat an additional BBQ sandwich to feel right.
That afternoon we saw half
a dozen hens. Here is a picture of one that has a beard.
The next morning we
hunted for two hours without any gobbler sightings. Then we drove to my
place and arrived too late to hunt. The weather was getting lousy fast.
