Bowhunt With Rick Philippi

Day 01 Continued - The Gobbler Flys Away...

Rick put his blind in a field 20 yards from the field's edge and set up his decoys, the new Knight & Hale Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl. In past years Rick has seen turkeys at this location but had never hunted there.

Before long a strutting big gobbler longbeard following a hen came, unheard, from behind the blind and passed by out of bow range to Rick's left. The gobbler stopped 80 yards away near the corner of the field. But hen walked around eating bugs and stuff. Soon the hen left the gobbler and walked along the field's edge in Rick's direction. It passed the blind within easy bow range.

However, the longbeard stayed where he was and gobbled and strutted. Rick gave a few yelps and then decided to stop calling. He thought that since the hen came through, the gobbler would too. 40 minutes later the gobbler started walking, slow but steadily, in the direction the hen had taken.

Soon the longbeard stepped into easy bow range, between the blind and the field's edge. Rick drew. He couldn't wait for the gobbler to stop so he aimed and shot. The hit looked good.

But the gobbler launched into the air and flew over the nearby trees and went out of sight in the trees past the corner the gobbler had came from. Rick hurried to us to see if we had seen the gobbler. We hadn't.

Rick knows these woods well and he started looking where he had last seen the gobbler. He criss crossed the patch of timber with no success for 150 yards. But he kept on going and suddenly walked up on the gobbler laying on the ground. It was 300 yards from the blind. Rick gave out a loud war hoop so we'd know he'd found it.

When Fred and I heard Rick's yell we knew he had recovered his gobbler. I told Fred I was leaving to find Rick and take his and the gobbler's picture. When I caught a glimpse of Rick walking back to his blind and caught up to him. Here is Rick with his eleven inch longbeard with sharp, inch and six tenths spurs.

EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:

BowTech Allegiance - "In all my years of hunting I have never shot a bow that is as quiet, fast and accurate as the BowTech Allegiance. It is incredible and in a short time I've taken 15 animals with it."
Double Bull Blinds - "It is the "turkey killing machine. The best ground blind on the market. The features and benefits that it has is second to none. Easy to set up, no glare, plenty of room, I love it."
Other Equipment Mentions - Rick used Carbon Express Terminator Hunter arrows tipped with Razorcap Broadheads from New Archery Products and a Trophy Ridge Drop Away Rest. His decoys were the Knight & Hale Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl.
