Hunt 2 -- Eastern Longbeard
After the two remaining gobblers
left Fred called and got an answer from behind us. We are setting on a
hill with a picked corn field behind us and a cow pasture at the top of
the hill, with a picked cornfield and cedar wind break on the far side
of it.
We heard a distant gobble
from the pasture at the top of the hill. I called and got an answering
gobble. We were videoing and Fred was on the left and I was on the right
and we needed to switch places so Fred could have a wider shooting area.
Before we could move I saw the red periscope heads and neck of two gobblers
They spied our decoys and started down to us right away. Fred slid the
video tripod over to me and I started the video camera and picked up my
own camera and took pictures in between adjusting the video. Here is the
lead gobbler admiring our decoys.
He made a half circle above
our hen and jake decoys and stopped. The other gobbler was 15 yards behind
him. The lead gobbler started in.
Here he comes. I'm wondering
which decoy he will go to, the hen or the jake.
These gobblers are all about
jakes. The second gobbler caught up and they are both jake bound.
Our lead gobbler postured
as tall as it could and slammed into the jake with its chest. I put my
camera down and concentrated on the video job.
Both birds went into full
strut and moved around behind the jake decoy. They were close together,
to close for a clear shot at a single gobbler. Fred was ready to shoot
when they separated enough for the shot he wanted.
Behind us, a group of hens
yelped. That got the attention of our two gobblers and they quickly stepped
away from the decoys and walked by us on the left side. But Fred could
not shoot to the left.
