IN NEBRASKA
Nebraska:
Hunt 1 -- Merrium's Longbeards
During our morning hunt it
was windy and the turkeys we saw were way off. Minutes before noon Fred
Lutger and I set up out of the wind near the bottom of a steep hill. I
took this picture of our hen and jake decoys at 11:58. The decoys are 8
yards from us.
We waited ten minutes and
I called.
Gobble!
Down hill, and close. I called
again and Fred said, "I see them. They're coming."
They sure were. I
set my call down and picked up my camera. They came into my view through
the Matrix window and at 12:15 I took their picture. Then I leaned to my
right and zoomed in a little.
And got a closer picture
of these two gobblers.
In spite of how promising
it had looked as they passed by us they kept walking and went toward the
edge of the woods.
Then they changed course
... toward our decoys.
In this picture they are
approaching Fred's taxidermy hen decoy (by Calley Morris). We were about
to see and experience something real exciting.
Surprise! The three gobblers
were not interested in the hen decoy. They went to my taxidermy Jake decoy
(from Calley Morris) and surrounded it.
The gobblers wanted some
of my Jake decoy -- it's the smaller bird in the middle. If he was real
he would be plenty worried about now.
It's a good thing the decoys
have metal legs and long stakes to push in the ground because the gobbler
that is sticking his neck up is bumping the decoy with his chest.
The gobblers have
my decoy's feathers ruffled.
Enough with the pictures.
I carefully and quietly switched the Sony for the BowTech. The gobblers
were all together and to get a shot I needed for them to separate. I waited.
Soon the three gobblers lost
interest in my jake and one went to the hen decoy and looked it over. A
second followed and the third went into a full strut. I drew and held for
the clear shot I needed. It turned slightly toward us and I looked for
its feet. The bright green pin (of the Kingsway sight) was incredibly visible
as I moved it to the kill spot. And released.
The arrow hit just right
and the gobbler darted for 25 yards and plopped down on the ground. Finished.
I picked up my Sony and took its picture.
The two other gobblers did
not spook. They walked up the hill and when they were gone we went to my
Merrium's longbeard Tom.
Fred took my picture with
my first gobbler of our 2007 Grand Slam bowhunt.
EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:
-
Bowtech
Guardian - I didn't get this new bow sighted in until last week
and was very anxious to see what happened when I let loose of the string
with a gobbler in front of me. It was all good. I've always been impressed
with how quiet BowTech bows are. This bow is the quietest yet. The two
remaining gobblers were unconcerned about their buddy's demise. They just
strolled away, unconcerned.
-
Grim
Reaper RazorTip - A wide inch and 3/4 cut of turkey demolition.
They fly like field tips and that is a big plus for sighting in the bow.
The RazorTip has a razor blade cut-on-impact tip and I like that for wild
turkeys. It cut a big entrance as well as exit wound on this gobbler. We
watched him drop in 25 yards. And if we would have needed it there was
a road map blood trail.

KingsWay
Archery Triad One Pin Bowsight - I received the bowsight that you
use a peep with. In 3 words: BRIGHT. BRIGHT. BRIGHT. The pin is the brightest
and most visible that I have ever shot. Sighting from the darkness of a
pop up blind is always an issue. Usually you have to use a light to illuminate
your pin, unless you stick the bow right up to the shooting window, which
can spook the game. This is the absolute best bowsight I've ever used in
a blind. It's definitely a turkey hunting happening.
-
Tree
Apron - This is new to me. My first thought was that it might not
hold all my turkey stuff. So I got out my turkey vest and started transferring
the necessary items over to the Tree Apron. It has separate pockets of
various sizes and other zippered and mesh compartments. It carries all
the stuff I want to carry for turkey hunting and the pocket system makes
them easy to locate when a gobbler is coming and saving time is imperative.
-
Billy Yargus Signature Series
mouth call (Woodhaven Custom Calls) - Two calls was all it took. I
used this call plenty last year and it has a realistic, clear tone. Woodhaven's
calls sound like real turkeys.

Other Bow Accessories:
VENOM peep sight system, the new Fletch Hunter release by Jim Fletcher
Archery, Trophy Ridge Drop Zone arrow rest and FINE-LINE bowquiver.
-
Arrows: MAXIMA 350 carbon
arrows (Carbon Express), fletched with the easy to use, accurate Arizona
EZ-Fletch using Gateway Feathers yellow died barred feathers. I
used bright yellow arrow wraps from EZ-EYE Arrow Wraps. I made them special
for this year's Grand Slam bowhunt.
Like the Grim Reaper
slogan says we Watched 'Em Drop. The RazorTip broadhead is great for turkey
hunting. |
