BOWHUNT IN NEBRASKA

"Longbeard" Coffee Cups = Real Good Luck, Part 2

After lunch we went back to the hill where we hunted the first day. We set out our decoys and stuck our bows and gear in the blind. Some soft hen yelps out of sight up the hill got us in a real hurry to get inside the blind and get sat down.  I nocked and arrow and propped my bow up against the sides of the blind. I soft yelped with the Woodhaven copperhead to get the turkeys attention and got a gobble that rattled the walls of the blind. Seconds later we saw hens 40 yards uphill and I took a pic of them at 12:51.

Behind them the gobbler's red head stuck up and he saw our decoys. He did not waste a minute, he came on down at a brisk walk. I put the Sony's cross hairs on the gobbler and took his pic at 12:52.

I knew I needed to get my bow in my hand right away but I could not resist taking one more picture.

I laid the camera on the ground. The gobbler was an Eastern and was now 10 yards from the decoys. Carefully, but a quickly as possible I gripped the handle of my BowTech and hooked my release on the string loop. The gobbler was almost to the decoys as I came to full draw. The Kingsway sight pin was very bright, just the way I like it, and I put the green fiber optic circle between the gobbler's waddles and his beard and touched the trigger. It knocked him down and he his wing flaps move him a short 10 yards and he hit the ground dead still. I took a pic.

When the hens were out of the area I recovered the gobbler. I laid it in the shade behind the blind and stepped inside it. Now it was Fred's turn again. He didn't have to wait long.

EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:

  • Grim Reaper RazorTip - Amazing! This 3/4 inch cut-on-impact expandable broadhead is doing us right on this year's Grand Slam turkey hunt. These broadheads fly like field tips so sighting in for them was quick and easy. The RazorTip has a razor blade cut-on-impact tip and that helps by cutting through these birds thick and rigid feathers, feathers which can actually deflect many other broadheads. The entrance cut was in the neck below the waddles and the broadhead sliced along the spine for another 12 inches of mostly bone. Impressive cutting power as well as penetration.
  • Kingsway Archery Triad One Pin Bowsight - I said this before, but it is right on. The pin on this bowsight is  BRIGHT. BRIGHT. BRIGHT. Definitely the brightest and most visible that I have ever used. Seeing your sight pins from the darkness of a pop up blind is always an issue. Usually you have to use a light to illuminate your pin, unless you stick the bow right up to the shooting window, which can spook the game. This is the absolute best bowsight I've ever used in a ground blind.
  • Bowtech Guardian - Fred and I practice shooting ever day, even if only for a short time. The quietness and smooth draw o the Guardian continues to impress me more every day. When I shot both this and the Merriam's gobblers the other birds were not alarmed by the sound of the bow, it's that quiet. BowTech has come from a small bow company to a leader in archery and bowhunting. One look at the Guardian and you see a bow with new ideas. Good ideas for bowhunters.
  • Tree Apron - Carry all the stuff you need for turkey hunting and use it for a comfortable seat while you wait hours on end in the turkey woods. The Tree Apron carries all the stuff I want to carry for turkey hunting and the pocket system makes them easy to locate when a gobbler is coming and saving time is imperative.
  • Copperhead mouth call (Woodhaven Custom Calls) - A few soft yelps brought 'them down. I used this call for the first time last year and it has a realistic, clear tone. Woodhaven's calls sound like real turkeys.
  • Other Bow Accessories: VENOM peep sight system, the new Fletch Hook release for string loops by Jim Fletcher Archery, Trophy Ridge Drop Zone arrow rest and my favorite quiver for a ground blind the FINE-LINE bowquiver.
  • Arrows: MAXIMA 350 carbon arrows (Carbon Express), fletched with the easy to use, accurate Arizona EZ-Fletch using Gateway Feathers yellow died barred feathers. I used bright yellow arrow wraps from EZ-EYE Arrow Wraps. I made these arrws special for this year's Grand Slam bowhunt.
  • Giving credit where it is due the Matrix blind from Double Bull makes it possible for a bowhunter to hunt turkeys without being detected by these sharp eyed birds. And I can't say enough about the hen and jake Calley Morris decoys. These taxidermy decoys look totally realistic -- after all they were real turkeys. Time and time again when longbeards, jakes and hens saw these decoys they come right to them. I'm talking coming without the hesitation they usually have when they see plastic decoys.
